COUNTY LIFE STYLE Upgrade that worn-out
conservatory roof After one of the hottest summers on record, many homeowners are keen to get some of those home improvement jobs done, including upgrading that worn-out conservatory roof.
Dont’ be duped by a clad over roof... Fortunately, new sophisticated designs and better materials mean that lightweight tiled conservatory roofs can retain warmth in the winter and keep your conservatory cool in the summer.
T
he next step is finding an installer to do the work, and there are a lot out there. But, as the popularity of tiled conservatory roofs has increased, so too has the number
of cases of installers practising clad overs – and the problems they leave after the installer has long gone don’t even bear thinking about. Put simply, a clad over is when an installation company
tries to pass off a quality engineered roof by simply leaving the existing structure in place. The installers will clad over the roof with tiles or slate using materials that don’t achieve the thermal requirements required to ensure the installation conforms to current building regulations.

And while it may appear to look almost as good as a
professionally fitted, solid tiled roof, problems will inevitably follow. The new roof will add too much weight to the original
PVCu or aluminium structure, it will offer no measurable insu- lation or structural calculations and it will be susceptible to cracking plaster and leaking at the first sign of rain. Neal Harper, General Manager at T&K Home
Improvements in Wellingborough, commented: “One of the perceived benefits of a clad over will be the cheaper cost, but when you consider the inevitable problems, they are very much a false economy. “Make sure you do your research and avoid unaffiliated
installers as it could potentially save you thousands of pounds in the long term. Here at T&K we directly employ all our installation teams, so customers can be certain that the work carried out is of the highest standard.”
