The Adventure of The Pigtail Twist
It is June 1884, a grey period for both the weather and Sherlock Holmes’ mood. A lack of compelling cases has left him bored and close once again to the dull embrace of the needle. Less than a month earlier, however, he had astonished Inspector Lestrade and everyone around him by solving no less than six crimes in consecutive days. At the eleventh hour, Inspector Gregson arrives, with the promise of an impossible crime to solve. A murder has shattered the bucolic peace of the sleepy arable farmlands of Bedfordshire. The owner of a small stately home has been brutally killed while hosting a dinner party. But what and where is the murder weapon? What follows is an epic, sweeping tale. From England to Africa, from poverty to wealth, the story spans decades. Hardship and friendship are followed by betrayal, deception and murder.

Grave Undertakings
In his own words, author, Dave (Jev) Haynes explains that he was born in Buckland, Hertfordshire, in 1950. He began drawing at an early age, introduced to paper by his frustrated mother, who was tired of scrubbing pencil from the dining-room walls The inspiration for this book is based on the author’s experiences as a pallbearer. Whilst he has the greatest respect for an outwardly very serious business, the undertaker’s lot is not without humour, though never indulged in at the expense of the bereaved. Some cartoons are based on actual events though illustrated with a liberal dollop of artistic licence; the rest are the children of a twisted imagination.

Hertfordshire A-Z
Pamela Shields’s book, a compendium of fascinating Hertfordshire facts, is an introduction to the county aimed at residents, visitors and tourists. Home to many ‘firsts’, such as the English Pope, the Garden City and the New Town, Hertfordshire was also home to many famous people, from King Offa to Laurence Olivier, George Orwell, Graham Greene and Henry Moore - all of whom are featured here. This is where England’s crown was surrendered to WIlliam the Conqueror and where a Frenchwoman and a Welshman started the Tudor dynasty. Among the county’s geniuses are Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, Sir Jon Sulston and Sir Stephen Hawking. Peculiar survivals such as the Herfordshire Spike and Herfordshire Puddingstone are included, as are urban myths, local legends and much more.
