UNDER THE HAMMER

Books, Maps and Ephemera

Since the advent of the internet, specialist book collecting, buying and selling has radically changed, mainly because the notion of a rare or fine book has been refined.

by W&H Peacock I

t is now apparent that many books which were regarded as scarce in the context of

Trade Journals are in fact more numerous than was previously thought. Selling, buying and reading has similarly been transformed by the development of the Tablet and other forms of digital technology. For the general consumer the consequent reduction in the cost of second hand ( or "Pre-owned" ) books is good news.

There is also very good news for those who are

fortunate enough to discover that a book they have brought into one of our valuation days is still a very rare or fine copy as these are currently rising in value. The range is still broad - it could be a 16th Century edition of Augustine’s works, a 17th Century ‘Breeches’ Bible, a 19th Century fine colour plate book or a mid 20th Century 1st Edition work of fiction signed by the author. There is a similar scenario for maps. Early

maps by cartographers such as Saxton, Speed, Hondius or Blome, particularly of certain areas in the UK or Africa and Asia, if in very good condition, still attract high prices. As do, surprisingly, fairly recent Atlases featuring, for example, London or other cities. Other early UK maps by Morden, Greenwood or Kip now appear more common and have dropped in value. Beware of facsimile copies which can be quite convincing. Ephemera - any printed or manuscript paper or vellum document, photographs, posters, albums, autographs, newspapers, journals, magazines

etc., can also bring pleasant surprises at auction. Downsizing, turning out the loft, garage or shed, dispersing a parent’s

property etc., may reveal hidden treasures - it is the exception rather than the rule but we are always ready to advise at one of our valuation days and it is always in your interests to check!
