Your Autumn Edition
the long hot summer of 1976, and this summer was almost on the same scale. Our past is often referred to for comparison with present day and a genuine desire to recall what has gone before remains as strong as ever - particularly with our readers. I continue to receive a significant amount of quality editorial submissions and strive very hard to select a good cross section of the best, and this issue is certainly no exception to the rule.

In this edition we visit the county town of Bedford. With its many assets, not least the River Ouse, this natural feature is enhanced with beautiful gardens and riverside walks. Add to this a variety of churches, the fine museums and the beautiful parks and you have a unique town with a strong and individual history.
This edition’s Aspects of Bedfordshire Life, ‘Buongiorno Bedford’, celebrates the mid-twentieth century influx of Italians who, post war, migrated to the county to find work, and ultimately added such a vibrant, rich and diverse aspect to our county’s personality. A community which remains as strong today as it did sixty years ago.
We have a selection of autumnal events, including our ever popular ‘Great Escapes’ and ‘Grand Days Out’, featuring return visits to Whitstable, synonymous with oysters and Peter Cushing, and the picturesque market town of Woodbridge, Suffolk, situated on the edge of the River Deben.
As we continue our journey of exploring great British traditions, we focus on Bonfire Night and the tradition behind this, sometimes controversial, tradition. And how could I possibly forget to mention the short story? A seasonal offering, ‘The Meeting Place’ will be a familiar story for those whose journey to find love can be retraced through events, locations and fate.
PS: We have received a good reaction to our ‘new look’ front cover. Thank you for your positive comments.
e have just emerged from a prolonged summer season of intense heat where the prospect of rain would have put a smile on many a face; particulary those avid gardeners among us. I can remember
