Customise energy products to make savings

Large energy users have a fantastic opportunity to create bespoke energy purchasing strategies and save money, says Lucia Harney-Dey, director of Kinect Energy.

THERE are several routes to savings and it starts with the energy products that organisations purchase. Facility management operators can go fixed, they can go flexible, and utility management specialists can create individual products for them. A utility management specialist, like

Kinect, has the power that a small business doesn’t, and that becomes more important when you’re buying and using large amounts of energy. Being able to pick and choose when you buy

is a big advantage. If you’re only buying a small amount then the impact is minimal, but if you’re purchasing and using high amounts then regularly buying at key points in the market can create a bigger collective of savings. It also allows you to control spend a bit

more. If you don’t keep a good handle on it, and the markets do shoot up, then that could be quite costly. You’ve got to really control it. Having somebody full time who is monitoring it, thinking about it and controlling it, and who is working to budgets and targets, is a huge advantage. A utility management specialist can help

businesses understand shift patterns, and work load patterns, so that you can really maximise your purchasing and savings. With electricity use in particular, there are still a lot of levies attached, but there is still an element of control and opportunities. It’s important to have access to the whole of

the market to create competition. For example, if one particular company wants to buy daily

certain tiny blocks of energy, not all suppliers and products will allow that. But large energy users can navigate their way around a market. They might want different payment terms or different purchasing strategies; it’s almost like a wish list that a facilities management operator can create. A utility management specialist can then go to the whole of the market with a tender document on behalf of the client. They then quickly discover who is willing to alter the way they operate to suit the client’s requirements. And while you can’t do much about the commodity prices, regular monitoring helps to keep a handle on it and manage and adequately prepare for any rises.

Energy and water efficiency at Carnoustie Golf Links

Kinect Energy worked with Carnoustie Golf Links to reduce operating costs across its three golf course. The courses - the Championship, Burnside and Buddon - are rated in the top 50 Links courses in the UK and Ireland.

The company has advised approximately 25 courses across the UK helping clients to develop energy and water management strategies that keep courses in prime condition.

Kinect Energy conducted audits of Carnoustie’s three golf courses to give the club a better understanding and when and where it was using energy and mains water. Armed with this information, the company highlighted cost savings and alternatives to help the club to reduce usage and also negotiated contracts on Carnoustie’s behalf.
