The managing director of Sporting Assets talks about a new £3m fund which aims to change the perception of social investment in sport.

SPORTING Assets, the sport for social impact advisor, launched Sporting Capital, the UK’s first impact investment fund focused on community sport this spring. The new fund aims to bring simple, repayable social investment into the community sports market and is looking to support around 30 organisations by June 2020 to develop sustainable community sports businesses through support and investment. The fund has been formed through a pioneering partnership between Sporting Assets and the Access Foundation and is funded through the Big Lottery Fund and Big Society Capital.
Q. What is Sporting Capital? Sport makes a real impact in communities, not just helping people to get physically fit but improving mental wellbeing, tackling loneliness, building links across communities and creating skills and job opportunities, to name but a few of the benefits. In doing this it delivers on many of the areas that social investment focuses on.

involved with social investment, focusing on the more complex end such as social impact bonds. At the same time the social investment sector has been slow to recognise the impact of community sport, primarily because much of the focus of sports’ strategy until recently has been about participation. As a result, the sport sector has been really poor at communicating how good it is at delivering impact.
