IN May 2017, Everyone Active appointed Pure World Energy (PWE) to install combined heat and power (CHP) gas microturbine units at a minimum of 20 of its facilities across the UK. Weymouth Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre in Dorset and Horfield Leisure Centre in Bristol are the first two sites to benefit from the technology. In Weymouth, the PWE Micro Power Station,
which consists of one C65 CHP gas microturbine, is achieving savings in energy costs and carbon emissions. It is expected to generate up to 345,000 kilowatt-electric (kWe) of electricity and 634,000 kilowatt-thermal (kWth) of heat per year. It will also provide Everyone Active with a total carbon reduction of 1,850 metric tonnes of CO2 over the period of the contract – the equivalent of driving 391 cars for one year. At Horfield Leisure Centre, two Capstone C65
CHP gas microturbines provide 85 per cent of the total electricity consumption and 73 per cent of total heat consumption. The use of two microturbines supports the centre’s significant heat requirements arising from facilities including a gym, a 25m pool, a teaching pool, extensive group exercise classes and a sports hall. A PWE Micro Power Station has also been installed at the site and is set to generate up to 885,000 kWe of electricity and 881,000 kWth of heat per annum. It will also provide a total carbon reduction of 3200 metric tonnes of CO2 over the 15-year contract – the equivalent of
685 cars driven for one year. Everyone Active has identified the next eight
facilities to receive the CHP units, which are at various stages of the design, planning and installation process. Sites include Queen Mother Sports Centre, Seymour Leisure Centre, Porchester Spa and the Neptune Centre. The installations form a large part of
Everyone Active’s wider energy efficiency plan. The organisation has created designated roles to cement its commitment to sustainability. For example, regional technical managers are expected to work as ‘energy champions’ to drive the environmental and energy reductions strategy and help develop tools for sites to use. And each Everyone Active site – there are over 160 nationwide - has a carbon reduction co-ordinator who works with the centre manager and site colleagues to achieve an ISO 14001 environmental accreditation and drive down consumption. “We’ve worked really hard to develop a
programme of continuing improvement. Environmental considerations and a good understanding of sustainability is a deeply engrained message that is delivered right from the offset to anyone coming to work for us,” says Mark Ford, south east regional technical manager. “One huge move for us was partnering with one of the top carbon consultants in the UK,

from which our carbon reduction coordinator scheme was born. The scheme allows our colleagues to share good practice and innovative ideas, meaning that it’s everyone’s responsibility to make Everyone Active as environmentally sustainable as possible.” Users are also encouraged to help meet the
environmental aims of the organisation, which shares information about green travel and promotes water saving initiatives. Across all centres, the impact on the environment is continually being monitored. All Everyone Active employees have made a commitment to the company’s continued aim to ensure the impact on the environment is minimised, not just globally but locally.
