This means that in sport the promotion and
take-up of socially-focused investment has fallen way behind the wider Third Sector. As an example, between them the Big Lottery Fund and Cabinet Office have invested more than £100m in capacity-building for the Third Sector - more if you include all the trusts and foundations - but less than one per cent of this has hit sport.
we want to invest in organisations that make a difference, or plan to make a difference, to individuals or local communities through sport
By delivering the impact investment fund,
our £3m Sporting Capital focuses solely on community sport and offers something everyone can understand – a simple, repayable loan – we are aiming to tackle this issue head on, stimulating more interest in social investment in sport and demonstrating the huge benefits for investors and beneficiaries alike. The goal is to eventually see even greater levels of investment in, and take up by, the sector.
Q. How do you define impact investment? Impact investment is where investment is made with the intention of making a tangible social impact as well as a financial return. The impact could be helping to deliver stronger communities, improving physical or mental health and wellbeing or increasing education and employment opportunities for local people When we provide funding to an organisation,
we don’t just want the money back over time, we want them to have also delivered a social return for their community. Community sports businesses and community
sports assets can drive community cohesion and wider impact. One example we have worked with is City of Birmingham Basketball club. Through their activities and facility – playing and coaching basketball – they are bringing together young people and helping to tackle gang violence whilst involving parents, friends and families to bring the wider community together.
Q. What type of organisations are eligible for funding? We want to invest in organisations that make a difference, or plan to make a difference, to individuals or local communities through sport. We don’t mind what the sport or activity is, so long as the investment helps to deliver impact as a primary purpose.
