GDPR With the 25th of May

coming and going, have you got it sorted? If not – Don’t panic! Te

General Data Protection Regulations(GDPR) builds on the requirements of the 1998 data protection act with the prime purpose to ensure that personal information is adequately protected in the modern digital age. Data protection is

designed to work with and not against anyone’s interests with obligations fitting into what you already do. Like being open, up front and honest with whoever you deal with. As the ultimate driver for

introducing GDPR is the result of data being stolen or ‘obscurely’ passed onto third parties. Te emphasis is on increasing awareness,

improving transparency and getting permission to share data. And can be done in three

steps. Firstly, carry out an audit

and create a policy by checking the type and quantity of data you hold. Making sure it is not only adequate, but appropriate and justified for the purpose(s) it's held for. Accepting at times it being

necessary to hold personal ‘sensitive’ information for legitimate reasons and ‘in the legitimate interest’ such as for PAYE, to provide credit facilities for a customer, or to pass on to third parties. Secondly, check security

whether paper based under lock and key in filing cabinets, on computer ‘hard drive’ or stored on the 'cloud'. It is the responsibility of the data holder, in other words you, to ensure and be able to

demonstrate that information is stored securely. And thirdly, demonstrate

transparency by informing those on which data is held, for example employees, suppliers and customers about the type and reason(s) for holding the information as well as giving everyone the opportunity to correct or have the information removed. Remember, whether
