ANSELL & SONS CELEBRATE 90 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Ansell & Sons, who this

year celebrate 90 years in business, is a high-class butcher’s shop owned and run by the Raymond family, with Derek and Lynne, their sons Paul and James and Paul’s wife Lynn. Te first time the shop took

on the name ‘Ansell’ was in 1928 when Leonard Ansell and his son Albert owned the business. Derek’s father Sidney

Raymond, who had been orphaned at the age of eight and didn’t know anything about his family history, started working for Leonard and Albert Ansell in the early 1930s when he was about

thirteen years old. Derek joined the business in 1963 and following the death of Leonard and the retirement of Albert Ansell, Sidney and Derek Raymond purchased the butchers business. But is wasn’t until Lynne

Raymond carried out historical research that the full story about the history of the butcher’s shop at 5 High Street, Maldon revealed that there has been a butcher’s business on the same site since 1796. More remarkable it transpired that it was Paul and James great, great, great, great grandfather William Raymond who first established that very butcher’s shop some 222 years earlier! n
