Better herd efficiency and increasing milk yields are top priorities for all dairy farmers. Especially with the current uncertainty in the market dues to challenges such as Brexit and declining milk prices, it has never been more important to maximise the nutrient utilisation of feeds and therefore increase efficiency and profitability. In a recent trial at the University of Nottingham, CRINA®

Protect functions by utilising the natural plant defence


systems; these defences cause a change in the rumen bacterial profile which results in increased propionate production and a decrease in protein degradation and rumen ammonia. Propionate is the precursor for glucose, leading to more glucose energy, coupled with the decreased protein degradation to produce more milk from the same feed intake. Increased glucose also reduces the risk of ketosis and promotes better fertility. Typically, milk production responses are 1.5-2.0kg of milk and feed efficiency is improved by about 8%. CRINA®

on investment in excess of 4:1, equalling approximately £1000 extra income per 100 cows per month through improved efficiency. CRINA®


Protect reduces ruminal protein degradability by reducing


microbial attachment and colonisation of feed particles, resulting in reduced speed of degradation of some protein sources and increased by- pass protein. Consequently, metabolisable protein supply is increased. More efficient nitrogen utilisation results in a multitude of benefits including more milk, milk protein, better efficiency and better profitability.

In the current economic climate with challenges in the dairy industry such as milk price and the impending complications of Brexit, it is important to use novel ways to improve milk yield and efficiency of feed utilisation.

In the recent trial at the University of Nottingham, CRINA® Protect


was fed at 2g per cow from day of calving until 60 days in milk. They were milked and fed in a robotic system with a partial TMR allowing individual intake, milk yield and methane production to be monitored. CRINA®


Protect resulted in a significant increase in milk yield, including


energy corrected milk and milk fat yield, with a significant increase in feed efficiency, results seen in Table 1. The results showed capture of energy in the rumen through increased total volatile fatty acids, greater propionate and reduction in methane loss. A reduction in weight loss in early lactation was observed by body condition scoring, important to improve fertility. This trial, along with numerous others, shows the efficacy of CRINA®
