Some of the best woodturners in the region will compete against each other at a Club Skills Day hosted by Axminster Tools and Machinery at Valegate Retail Park on Saturday 5th August. The event has attracted five clubs from Wales and one from Gloucestershire who will compete for two main prizes on the day. “A nominated member from each club will have 45 minutes to produce a turned piece at one of our lathes,” says Store Manager Lee Parfitt. “These will each be evaluated by rival clubs and store visitors who will vote for their favourite piece.
Each club will also
be asked to showcase the best pieces recently turned by their members. This will also offer a prize based on votes from all participating club members and customers in the store.” Lee said that Axminster Tools and Machinery had a keen following amongst woodturners and this was a fun way of recognising their loyalty and support. “It promises to be a highly entertaining day with plenty on offer for anyone interested in starting a new hobby or just coming along to enjoy the skills of these very talented turners.”
This free event, with free tea and coffee, will start and 10 am and run through to 4 pm.
Residents and team members at Greenhill Manor Care Home in Merthyr Tydfil are crossing their green fingers and hoping for gold after entering a national gardening competition.
The award-winning care home was visited by judges for the annual Hallmark in Bloom competition. Greenhill Manor will go up against all 15 of Hallmark Care Homes across England and Wales, with a number of categories which include Best Resident Engagement, Best Visual Appeal and Best Community Collaboration. As part of this year’s celebrations
team members at the home dressed up and invited guests to watch a variety of circus performances, which included a stalk walker, and take part in carnival games. One of the judges on the day, Operations Director for Hallmark Care Homes, Cheryl Wanklyn said: “I had a fantastic time judging the gardens at Greenhill Manor as part of this year’s Hallmark in Bloom competition.
“The team and residents have worked together to create some beautiful outside spaces that are wonderful places for residents to socialise and benefit from the great
outdoors.
The circus themed celebration was so much fun to see and it was a delight to see everyone enjoying the party”.
The results will be announced next month.
