Work has started on the first phase of Plasdr, Cardiff’s £2billion garden city, creating the first homes in a brand-new community in Cardiff. The first 12 of an initial 30 proposed homes are currently being built on a 1-acre site to the north of Llantrisant Road by lead developer Redrow Homes. Of the 1 homes that have been released so far,  have already been reserved. These homes are due to be occupied in the autumn, with their owners becoming the first residents of Plasdr. The Mills family were one of the first to purchase a home on the development and will be among the founding members of the Plasdr community. Sian Mills and her husband Michael, along with their two children Evan, 8, and Carys, , will be some of the first residents and are expecting to move into their new 3-bedroom home in October this year. Talking about Plasdr, Sian Mills said “Before we heard about Plasdr we hadn’t really thought about purchasing a new build home. Housing developments can sometimes be a bit claustrophobic, but what really attracted us to Plasdr was the garden city’ aspect. We love the idea of living somewhere with lots of space and green, open areas. s a young family, the parks, sports facilities and cycle paths are really appealing to us. “It’s important to us to live somewhere that has a sense of community. In our old house, we would only see our neighbours briefly when getting in the car – it was a busy road so there wasn’t much opportunity to stop to talk. t Plasdr we know we’ll be part of a friendly community where we can build relationships with the people around us.

“We see Plasdr as somewhere we will really put down roots. Our children will be friends with other children living at Plasdr, play in the parks there, use the sports facilities and maybe even purchase homes there themselves when they’re older.” Plasdr is inspired by the Garden City Movement of the 1th Century, founded on principles of “fresh air, sunlight, breathing room and playing room”.  total of 7000 homes have been planned over a 00 acre-site bordering Fairwater, St Fagans, anescourt and Radyr and will take shape gradually over the next 1 years. Plasdr is not just a residential development, it will be a place where residents and local people can live, work and play. Plans for the development include five new schools, health centres, shops, offices, pubs and restaurants, leisure centres, playing fields, parks, and preserved woodland.  total of 10 acres on the development will be dedicated to open space. In total, Plasdr will contribute a total of £73.8million in community benefits to the local area. Of this, £0.37million will go towards education, with plans for Plasdr including four new primary schools and a secondary school within the development. The first of the primary schools will be delivered within four years as part of the first phase of the development and will provide 80 places for children. £27.7million has been allocated to support transport, including improvements to existing infrastructure and creating a carefully planned hierarchy of roads, paths and cycleways within the development to maximise walking, cycling and the use of public transport.  further £.23million will

go towards creating community facilities within the development for the enjoyment of residents of Plasdr and the wider community. In addition to these contributions, Plasdr is expected to create over 30,000 jobs during its lifetime. While many of these will be through the construction phase, permanent jobs will also be created through the education, health, leisure, office and retail facilities included in the plans. s work on Plasdr progresses, a number of different developers will come on board to create distinct areas of individual character within the community that will feature a variety of styles and designs to suit all needs. Infrastructure improvements are set to continue and work at a second Redrow site on Pentrebane road will begin before the end of the year for a further 20 homes. Wayne Rees, project director for Plasdr at Redrow, said “t Plasdr we want to create a genuinely sustainable community where people can put down roots and begin establishing a home for future generations, set up businesses, work, go to school, play and enjoy their leisure time. “The Mills family, and the other residents of this first phase of Plasdr, will be the founding members of a new community, helping to establish and shape it for future generations to come. “While Plasdr will become a new community, we also want to ensure that it blends with the wider community surrounding it and provides additional facilities that are needed for the area as a whole to thrive.” More information on Plasdr can be found at www.plasdwr.co.uk.
