Starting life as a humble under garment, the T-shirt itself is quite young. The first manufactured t-shirt was invented between the Mexican- American War in 1898, and 1913 when the U.S. Navy began issuing them as standard undershirts. It took until 1920 for the term T-shirt to be coined by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his novel ‘This Side of Paradise’. Move forward to Brando and Dean and the classic white T……… Bring on the 1950s when one company received the licence to print Disney characters on the T-shirt. In the ‘70s, we can probably thank the punk movement as the garment became a platform for powerful messaging….. and well the rest, as they say is history. Isabel Marant International €95
