The latest facts, fads and tips to help keep you in ship shape condition this season

SPA OF THE SEASON HOTEL PREIDLHOF

SOUTH TYROL The Ladurner family opened the doors to their South Tyrolean resort more than 50 years ago, turning this sprawling Vinschgau Valley sanctuary into a medical destination to be reckoned with. Here, you can lose yourself in the views, inhale the mountain air and ramble through orchards, vineyards and winding trails. Or you can zone out in the spa – complete with endless pools, saunas and the cosiest relaxation pods ever. Therapies veer from medical to mindful (the gong meditations are blissful), though most guests visit to lose weight, get fit and recuperate. www.preidlhof.it

BEAUTY MYTH THERE’S NO WAY TO PREVENT YELLOWING NAILS

The Truth: There is no way to prevent yellowing nails. Painting nails can eventually lead to a yellow tint, and here are a few ways to prevent and treat them. First, be sure to use a base coat before applying nail polish. Next, choose a top coat with UVA/UVB protection. Also, use baking soda as a secret weapon to bring your nails back to life after a heavy application of polish.

HEALTH HACK FLAXSEED An excellent source of nutrients including protein, fibre and omega 3 fatty acids, along with vitamins and minerals. Instead of eating them whole, whizz to a powder. They’re more nutritious this way, as the whole seed can pass through the body undigested because of the tough outer husk. Finely ground seeds are also more appetising, sprinkle over breakfast cereal or add to smoothies and salad dressings.

IS IT WORTH IT? SCLEROTHERAPY

Standing on your feet all day, suffering from spider veins? Sclerotherapy might be the answer.

Cost: 300 euros per 30 minute laser session; 350 -750 euros per injection.

Lasts: While spider veins will disappear, eventually touch ups are needed.

Who should do it: Anyone looking to get rid of spider veins and smaller varicose veins.

Why you should do it: You can see significant results with just one session of injections into the veins, called sclerotherapy. If spider veins are more prominent, some patients will opt for three treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart. Treatment is only mildly uncomfortable, and feels like little pin pricks.

Know before you go: Veins will actually look worse before they start to look better. The veins can turn red from the treatment and look a little hive-like. The veins can look darker before they get lighter because the veins collapse over the blood which is another side effect.

Downside: It takes four to six weeks for the area to look normal again.

Upside: You can resume regular activity the next day.
