Sword & Trowel 2018: Issue 1 TABERNACLE DEAF FELLOWSHIP
AN UPDATE ON THE WORK OF THE DEAF FELLOWSHIP, BY TABERNACLE DEACON ANDREW OWEN
Saturday Deaf Meetings
Monthly Saturday evangelistic meetings continue through Autumn- Spring. These attract a number of deaf friends who cannot attend on the Lord’s Day, also deaf people living as far away as Lincolnshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and Sussex.
Deaf baptism
The Tabernacle held a baptis- mal service on 11th
March when a
number of people went through the waters, including one of our deaf sisters, saved out of Islam. Nasim waited patiently for three years for her husband to approve, and her patience and prayers were rewarded when at last he gave his permission. She was baptised with a beaming face and a record 45 deaf people attended on that joyful day.
Deaf Holiday Bible Club
During the Easter
holidays the Taber- nacle hosted its Deaf Holiday Bible Club for the second year running. A modest number of deaf chil- dren of different ages attended, including some with learning diffi culties and other disabilities. The theme

was ‘Science and the Bible’ and chil- dren were happy to make ‘slime’ and test for acids and alkalis in common kitchen substances. Talks were on rel- evant science-related items from the Bible. On one day a visit was made to the Royal Institution and a series of in-situ talks on Michael Faraday’s life and faith was delivered to the deaf children.
New book for deaf people A new book for deaf people has
been produced. Deaf people have a strong sense of deaf history, so this evangelistic biography has been writ- ten for them. Dr John Kitto, famous as a Christian author and deaf, lived in Spurgeon’s time and had an ad- venturous life. The book is written in easy-to-read English for deaf read- ers, and is suitable for any who struggle with reading, those who have English as a second language and ideal for children. It is available from the Tabernacle Bookshop.
