Sword & Trowel 2017: Issue 1
on ‘Creation vs Evolution’ in our church. We printed invitations and also used social media to invite people. About 40 came. The guest speaker was Prof Rodolfo Paiva, who works in a university in the city of Campinas, in the state of São Paulo. He is part of the ‘Intelligent Design’ group of Christian scientists here. On 7th
September we held an after- noon seminar on child evangelism. Again about 40 people attended, including 12 visitors from other churches. In the morning we had short talks for the teachers we have in our church and a fellowship meal with the teachers. In the afternoon, we held the seminar to which we had invited pastors and teachers from many churches. We began with talks on the Lord’s command for child evangelism and on evangelistic Sun- day Schooling. This was followed by practical topics and demonstration lessons.
Literature translation work is
moving well. We have 10 new titles translated and under revision. The books already published are stead- ily fi nding their way into the hands of those who eagerly desire more profound teaching and a return to biblical ways and practices. Our own congregation has become a read- ing people, who make great effort to deepen their knowledge and un- derstanding of biblical doctrine and practice. We ask for your continued prayers for our ministries and for more con- versions in our midst.

A VISIT TO THE FALKLAND ISLANDS
in April 2017, by Chris Cooper, an elder of the Tabernacle, and his wife Philippa
I
N January 1888 C H Spurgeon was asked to recommend a man to minister in the capital of the Falkland Islands, Port Stanley. Mr G H Harris went out and began pioneering. By December 1889 the work had grown and a building was needed. A pre- fabricated ‘tin tabernacle’ was sent out with the help of Spurgeon. That building was erected in 1892 and is still in use. The small congregation that stands today requested that the 125th
anniversary meetings be taken
by a visitor from the Metropolitan Tabernacle. Elder Chris Cooper and his wife Philippa travelled the 8,000 miles to Stanley by the RAF ‘air bridge’ and stayed for two weeks. The Falkland Islanders are in- tensely British in their loyalties. The memory of the 1982 Argentine inva- sion and the subsequent liberation which cost many lives is still a recent memory for many. The Coopers were introduced to the Governor of the Islands and had the opportunity to tell him of our work in London. Sadly, church attendance in the Is- lands has fallen to a low ebb with few of the population attending any place
