ExEcutivE REPORt Hillhead Highlights

Nick Johnson reports on some of the smaller plant on display at this year’s Hillhead – the UK's largest quarrying, construction and recycling exhibition.

O

ver the years the bi-annual Hillhead Quarry Show has expanded to embrace

not only larger and more specialist machines for quarrying, but also to include more general construction machinery. So this year’s event provided a good selection of smaller plant including launches of brand new mini excavators.

Of particular interest was the UK unveiling by Case Construction Equipment of its new D series of mini excavators. These result from Case’s parent, CNH Industrial N.V. acquiring a 90% stake in the Italian company Sampierana SpA in September last year.

Sampierana produces Eurocomach compact excavators and these now form the basis of the new Case D series line-up of 20 models, with operating weights from 1000 to 6000kg (including two electric machines). The Case liveried units seen at Hillhead were the electric CX15CV together with the diesel engined CX12D, CX19D, CX25D, CX35D and CX50D.

Due for release next year, the canopy equipped CX15EV electric mini weighs in at 1315kg and has a 16.0kW electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries. It has an on-board charger, which is claimed to fully recharge the batteries in ten hours. Use of an external 3-phase rapid charger is said to reduce full recharge time to 1.5 hours.

The smallest of the diesel engined new Case minis was the CX12D. This weighs 1305kg (canopy) and is powered by an 8.8kW Stage V Kubota D722 engine. This machine features an extendable width undercarriage, the choice of gear or variable displacement hydraulic pumps, servo

assisted joysticks and two-speed travel with automatic shifting.

The previous series of Case mini excavators resulted from a joint venture with Hyundai. This South Korean construction equipment maker is updating its own mini line and new units (weighing in from 1,800 to 5,500kg) will be unveiled at Bauma in October.

Other companies promoting electric mini excavators were the Volvo dealer SMT GB and Wacker Neuson. SMT’s stand included an ‘Electric Village’ featuring the EC18 Electric and ECR18 Electric compact excavators and the L20 Electric compact wheeled loader.

JCB was one of a handful of major names notable by their absence. However, the JCB electric mini excavator and electric site dumper were shown on the stand of Clee Hill Plant. This innovative hire company revealed that it has started to update the now obsolete, but still popular, 12.5 tonne Hamm HW95 deadweight roller. Shown in a white livery, this unit is now electric rather than diesel and has a sloping bonnet to improve forward visibility.

Yanmar used Hillhead to show off machines in its new corporate colours of ‘Premium Red’ and grey. Latest additions to its mini excavator range include the SV17VT, which weighs 1700kg with canopy or 1790kg with cab.

With a 980-1320mm variable width undercarriage, the SV17VT is powered by an 11.3 kW Yanmar TNV series Stage V diesel engine. The new electric SV17E will be unveiled at Bauma.

Bobcat’s prominent stand included a demonstration area. Amongst the recently introduced products were the 63.4kW L85 compact wheel loader and the 8890kg E88R2 series midi excavator. Bobcat badged compaction equipment included an R60 rammer, FP10.30 and HP65.85 vibrating plates and a 1200mm drum width ATR26 lightweight tandem roller.

Case showed a selection of its new D series mini excavators including this electric EX15CV.

Alongside a new generation mini excavator – the 2705kg DX27Z – Doosan showed one of its new compact wheel loaders resulting from the recent badge engineering supply

agreement with Netherlands-based Tobroco- GiANT. The machine on show was the 55kW DL80-7 that has a top speed of 35km/h.

Hitachi was highlighting the new electric ZE85 midi excavator they’re calling the ‘Green Machine’, and dealer Abiljo Excavator Services was promoting the clean and quiet virtues of the two Kovaco electric loaders – the Elise skid steer and the small tracked MiniZ 400. Meanwhile Takeuchi showed the diesel engined, 3700kg payload TCR50-2 to herald its return to the UK tracked dumper market.

In amongst all the larger quarry machinery, Rubble Crusher showed a new version of its small RC150. Following customer acceptance of its compact trailer-mounted unit, this Leicestershire-based company has introduced a tracked version.

Called the RC150 V, the mini crusher has Strickland rubber tracks to provide a mobile unit complete with a discharge conveyor and radio remote control. It utilises a 28kW Yanmar engine from Japan together with Italian pumps and hydraulic motors. n
