Sing little birdie As seen at the recent Hillhead expo – at least by those
who beat the horrendous traffic jams en route – the ‘DustCanary’, from Arosa Instruments Ltd, is a wearable device that monitors levels of workplace dust in real-time. DustCanary comes in four variants, all alerting users
to high levels of respirable silica dust – the toxic stuff produced by cutting, drilling or abrading stone, concrete, bricks, blocks and mortar. Features vary across the range, from basic alarms to sophisticated units with graphical displays and reporting functions designed for exposure limit assessments and location analysis. DustCanary is designed to work for eight hours
between charges. It is based on air sampling technology developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the University of Hertfordshire. It employs a blower creating 200Pa of pressure head to draw air through a low pressure drop HEPA filter – all packed within a diminutive unit no heavier than the average smartphone. Respirable silica dust is the silent killer of the workplace, claiming
around 1000 UK workers every year and responsible for other life- limiting conditions such as silicosis, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

the UK, allowing the group to offer a widened range of products and services, including the option to purchase new equipment through Chippindale dealership agreements with Volvo, Bomag, Mecalac, Epiroc, Atlas Copco, Stihl and Belle. AER Rents has grown quickly in recent years. Its first
acquisition was Mr Plant Hire in 2014, followed by Drogheda Hire & Sales and the Mainline Group in 2020, and Welfare 4 Hire just last year. Each business has retained its identity, while capitalising on the strengths of their collective offerings and reach across the UK and Ireland. Commenting on the move, Nigel and Peter Chippindale said:
“We are delighted to be joining AER Rents fold. It’s a perfect fit not only for Chippindale Plant and its employees, but also for our customers. AER Rents are a forward-thinking organisation with an eye on expansion. The acquisition will allow us access to significant further investment to enhance and expand the range of equipment we offer. We’re really looking forward to working with the AER Rents team and their existing plant hire companies.”
