THE great thing about having a real passion is that you never know where it is going to lead.


For Vaughan Griffiths, a keen interest in vehicles and vehicle engineering saw him working with some of the most impressive and memorable machines of the 70’s, 80s and 90s, working for national UK waste management company Leigh Environmental.


The company had a large fl eet of dry and liquid waste collection vehicles ranging from skip loaders, hook loaders, trade waste collection vehicles, industrial rear end loaders and front end loaders, as well as hazardous and non-hazardous liquid waste vacuum tankers. And Vaughan was at the helm of the company’s fl eet as National Fleet Engineer, overseeing the fl eet from Bristol in the South West up to Scotland.


His responsibilities included the purchase of new dry and liquid waste collection vehicles, as well as carrying out fl eet valuations on vehicles operated by waste disposal companies which Leigh

was about to acquire. He also oversaw the management of daily and weekly maintenance and the inspection of the vehicles throughout the company’s national fl eet.


Vaughan did not come to Leigh as a doe- eyed boy. To the contrary, the company sought him out for his expertise and know-how. Prior to joining Leigh, Vaughan actually worked in the waste industry for Progressive Waste Disposal and Safeway Sludge Disposal, companies which Leigh acquired in the early 1980’s.

Vaughan purchased new vehicles to add to Leigh’s fleet with innovation, safety and sustainability at the forefront of his mind. Vaughan bought skip loaders from David Mackrill engineering, later becoming Maclift Ltd as well as from P.D. Engineering, later to become known as Lacre PDE and PDE Geesink. Hook loaders were bought from Reynolds Boughton, later to become known as Boughton Engineering and equipment was bought from P.D. Engineering (Lacre PDE/PDE Geesink) and Multilift through


Multilift Ltd, later to be known as Cargotec and Partek Cargotec.


Trade waste collection vehicles were bought from either Jack Allen’s, Dennis Eagle, Lacre PDE or Incomol. Industrial rear end loaders were bought from either Jack Allen’s, Dennis Eagle, Norba part of Cargotec, later to be known as
