Fast growing Bristol business on the lookout for more apprentices

THE ETM Group, a Bristol highways maintenance and recycling company, is on the lookout for more apprentices as it looks to continue its rapid rise in the South West, which will include a new £4m recycling plant opening in April.

Since Britain voted to leave the EU, the fl ow of non-UK skilled nationals working in the country has decreased, leaving many companies struggling to fi nd qualifi ed replacements.

ETM Recycling managed to achieve a 35% increase in turnover for 2018, having hit £7.6m, which was up by £2m from the previous year.

ETM are hoping to address this defi cit with more apprentices. Amy McCormack, Director of ETM Recycling, stated apprentices were key to the company’s long-term growth strategy.

She said: “The challenges in recruitment nationally are well documented. We’re looking to take on more apprentices, particularly with the new plant opening, and we’re keen to future-proof the business and create a world-class apprenticeship programme.”

ETM currently has two apprentices: one training as a mechanic and the other for an offi ce-based administration role. Four apprentices have successfully graduated into permanent roles within the company,

She said: “The apprenticeship was great for me as it meant that I could get involved and learn new things instead of being stuck in a classroom. During that time, I was provided with support and encouragement as I progressed further.

“Five years later I have moved up within the company, whilst being challenged and encouraged to move forward daily. I never thought I’d reach where I am and have this much job satisfaction at the age of 21 - and it all started from an apprenticeship.”

Amy added: “We have found it tough getting apprentices recently, despite trying tirelessly to get mechanics in, which is a shame as we have so much work, while the ones we do get tend to stay on.

“It’s always great to welcome new blood and help train a new generation with on-the-job

training as these are the people who will drive the company forward in the future.”

This search for new apprentices comes as ETM Recycling is investing £4m in a new state-of-the-art zero waste to landfi ll recycling facility which is currently being built in their present site at Ashton Vale, Bristol.

Following a successful and lucrative 2018, the company decided to make the multi- million-pound investment to keep their momentum going.

ETM Recycling managed to achieve a 35% increase in turnover for 2018, having hit £7.6m, which was up by £2m from the previous year.

The company was also recently appointed on a three-year deal by Bristol Sport to handle all waste from Ashton Gate, home of Bristol City Football Club.

Amy added: “Formed in 2010, ETM Recycling invested and built a state-of- the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) a year later at Ashton Vale to reduce the amount of waste disposed via landfi ll sites – and provide a recycling centre for the local community to dispose of their waste.

“It is one of the few recycling facilities in Bristol to achieve more than 94% recycling of all waste coming through the centre.”
