The Promo Column
Merchandise is in the bag W
ith all the stuff we now have to carry, is it time to welcome back the bum bag? Once the butt (ho ho) of fashion jokes, I’m now tempted to invest in one having spotted some pretty cool ones in stores.
Of course, that may have may be a sign of age – I’ve started wearing socks with sandals too.
Putting aside whether or not I’m on the cutting edge of dad couture or not, the idea of having somewhere to store all your bits and pieces is not so daft. A quick look online reveals that they are in fact a promotional standby available in many configurations, from simple waist bags to full on utility belts, such as Xindao’s Explorer ribstop bag. This chunky piece of brandable kit is almost a mini rucsac for your middle, capable of carrying a selection of items and a water bottle.

For those who travel a bit lighter, Juniper Products has developed a cool little hand sanitiser pouch, which can be attached to a bag, belt or lanyard for easy access without contaminating your bag or pocket. It is also a clear visual reminder to clean your hands regularly and has room for personalisation or branding on the front and back. Made in the UK, it has a low carbon footprint and supports British jobs. It is doubly sustainable as it is made from offcut waste from Juniper’s notebook production, which was previously sent to landfill. Available in 20 colours and 400 colour combinations, you can have it in leather or in a vegan friendly version. It is ideal for staff who don’t have easy access to a sink, or for staff or children who are moving from room to room. It can be supplied with or without a 50ml bottle of sanitiser.
Of course, not everything can be attached to your person. Who hasn’t had that heart stopping moment when they suddenly realise they’ve walked away from a meeting or off a train without their bag?
operated Tracker Card makes your bag traceable via an automatic phone signal so you don’t lose or forget it. Just as long as your phone isn’t in the bag. The briefcase is available in three colours and as a messenger briefcase with shoulder strap.
Postponed events This year’s London Marathon is due to take place in October due to postponement from its usual spring date. However, the many charity runners who make it such a colourful and effective fundraiser won’t be involved this year due to ongoing concerns over mass events. The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity has launched its own running challenge, the Marsden Marathon, to help supporters fill some of the funding gap – around 400 supporters of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity were due to raise over £700,000.
It is asking supporters to run 26.2 miles in 26 days during September as part of a challenge that gives those who were already training for an event a new goal to work towards, and gives people who have never considered running before an accessible way to take on 26.2 miles.
Funds raised from sponsorship will support staff and patients at the world-leading cancer hospital. Supporters can sign up online where they’ll get their own web page which is linked to Strava so they can keep track of their miles, raise funds and unlock virtual badges. Participants will receive a Royal Marsden Cancer Charity running buff when they have raised £50 and a medal for those who raise £200.
If it has happened to you then help is at hand in the shape of the Travelteq’s traceable smart briefcase with wireless charging function. Get down and dirty A lot of people have found their inner Mo Farah during lockdown, using the time to kickstart a health kick. Others have focussed on their inner Alan Titchmarsh and got down and dirty in their gardens, allotments, or just their window boxes. Apparently 45% of Britons coped with lockdown by going gardening – more than turned to cooking or reading. Companies such as Sow Easy produce mailable seed products that can be branded
In these trying times, leaving the house – for those of us who can – has become an ever trickier exercise. Never mind keys, wallet, phone, now you can add in hand sanitiser, face mask, hygiene hook, lucky rabbit’s foot… the list goes on. Promotional products commentator, Stuart Derrick, reports.
