Garment transfer paper can add a great benefit to your business


In this month’s Transfer Print Column, Peter Wright, managing director of Amaya Sales UK, takes a whistle stop tour of what transfer papers can do for you.


I


f you are a garment decorator the chances are that you have embroidery machines, direct to


garment printers, vinyl heat transfer and maybe screen printing.


If you are not doing transfer printing, then you are probably missing out on extra revenue and a wider flexibility. A major benefit of transfer printing is its ability to be applied to most fabrics and substrates. You can use the paper to print onto cotton, polyester, glass, wood, metal, leather, candles, plastic etc, etc. You will not have to turn away any job that a customer offers you. You will also be able to offer your customers the best solution for their order. I’ll take you through the printing options that transfer paper will give you.


● Printing full colour on to black or coloured garments


This will require the use of a white toner printer such as an Oki Pro 8423 WT or Oki Pro 9541WT (the 9541 is a more expensive printers but allows more options if you want to print onto card or paper).


These printers will allow you to lay down a white ink base and give you a vibrant colour design. Of course, if you have a DTG printer and are printing onto cotton you may prefer to use that. If you are printing on to dark polyester then the transfer paper method will do the job perfectly.


● Printing single colour on to black or dark garments


This paper allows single colour printing on dark garments but only requires a standard black laser printer. The papers are available in standard colours, metallic and neon. This paper has many uses and can print intricate designs for fashion or personalisation, with no weeding. Prints on to most fabrics and substrates, such as cotton, polyester, mixed fabric, nylon, leather, denim, paper, book covers, felt and much more.


● Printing on to white shirts


There are several types of transfer paper available for printing on to white or pale coloured shirts. These are all one paper systems and range from basic high production to high end production. The basic products are ideal for printing full colour on to shirts, mouse mats caps etc.


The high-end papers for printing on white offer intricate printing with no weeding and no background around you image. One of these requires the use of a white toner printer and gives

brighter colours on a white shirt. The other one is a transparent product and works with a standard CYMK laser printer. Again, if you have a DTG printer and are printing on to cotton, you may prefer to use this. DTG will give you a better feel on white shirts and cost much less to print.


● Hot stamping foils


These are used in conjunction with the full colour printing on to dark garments. Once you have pressed your A and B papers on to your garment, you then apply the metallic foil and heat press again. These are available in a wide variety of colours.


● Transfers for hard surfaces


Being able to print full colour onto hard substrates, opens up a whole new side of your business. You will be able to personalise a vast number of products and maybe this will also attract customers to other sides of your business. There are a variety of transfer papers for hard surfaces.


Transfers that can be applied to wood, ceramic, slate, metal, glass, plastic and even candles. To apply these papers, you would require a good class heat press, ideally one that can hover over the transfer. One of the main benefits of transfer paper is that it can be applied to so many different fabrics and substrates. So, with a good quality transfer paper there are many ways that you can benefit your business and add greatly to your bottom line.


There are two leading transfer manufacturers in the market so please try them both and check out your preference. So, a transfer paper system will give you total flexibility in your business at a relatively low cost.
