Sublimation vs. toner transfer – Get the best of both worlds
Sublimation printing and toner transfer printing are well known technologies in small format personalisation of gift items such as T shirts, mugs, phone covers, bottles, signs and other blanks. Here Ghost explains how you can get the best of both worlds.

or years these technologies have been competing about printing businesses to go with either one or the other technology. In fact, both technologies have certain benefits unique to each other so that the decision was up to the customer. Toner transfer with white toner required the investment into a specialised laser printer but enabled the print shop to transfer designs to dark and light textiles of all kinds (cotton, polyester, felt, leather and more) as well as to hard surfaces such as mugs. The cost per print was mainly determined by the use of two-step or one-step transfer media.
On the other hand, sublimation printing with a sublimation enabled small format inkjet printer required the lower investment but had higher output cost because of expensive sublimation inks. The technology only works on polyester-based blanks, which are widely available though. Sublimation printing yields the best image quality as the colour gamut of an inkjet printer is much wider than of a laser printer. Also, the wash ability of sublimation printed items is superior to transferred products. With Ghost White Toner and Ghost Sublime Toner customers now can get the best of both worlds in one machine. Ghost offers White Toner cartridges for toner transfer onto dark substrates as well as a set of sublimation enabled CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) Sublime Toner Cartridges. All these cartridges can be easily interchanged in the HP Color Laserjet printer M452 or M252. Customers can either convert their existing laser printer into a white toner or sublimation printer or they can purchase a Ghost Printer + Toner Bundle.
Ghost White Toner Transfer is a very versatile way to create customised products such as T shirts, workwear, mugs, bottles, signs and more. With Ghost the black Toner Cartridge inside the printer is replaced by a Ghost White Toner Cartridge. Now the design or motif is printed with on a sensitive coated media often called the A-sheet or transfer sheet. Laser printers use toner
White Toner Cartridges from Ghost are available for a huge range of laser printers. So all a customer needs to get started is a suitable printer and a heat press.

which is an electromagnetic powder to create the image. Because of the characteristics of toner it can be used in heat activated transfer.
After printing, a so called B-sheet or glue-sheet is married to the A-sheet using a heat transfer press. By heat and pressure a chemical reaction between the glue/adhesive on the B-sheet and the toner powder on the A-sheet transfers the adhesive to the print.
This technology is commonly used to produce small to medium runs of T shirts, textiles and promotional Items.
Sublimation printing is a digital printing technology using full colour artwork that works with polyester and polymer-coated substrates and is commonly used for decorating apparel, signs and banners, as well as novelty items such as cell phone covers, plaques, coffee mugs, and other items with sublimation-friendly surfaces. Heat and pressure are applied to a solid, turning it into a gas through an endothermic reaction without passing through the liquid phase. Ghost Sublime Toner is easy to use. Just replace the regular CMYK toner cartridges with a set of Sublime CMYK Toners and you are ready to go. Ghost Sublime was specially developed for transfer to polyester textiles. Print your design on regular copy paper and transfer it directly onto polyester and polymer-coated textiles such as T shirts, pillows, and bags. Of course, Ghost Sublime also works on other sublimation-friendly surfaces such as key chains, cell phone cases, mugs, purses, bags and many others.
Ghost is the first company to make these two printing technologies available in one small format HP office laser printer. Compatible toner for more printers will be launched in 2019. The Ghost White Toner products are also available for more than 700 printers.
