Gildan releases its 2016 CSR report G
ildan Activewear has released its 2016 corporate, social and environmental responsibility (CSR) report. The report offers a comprehensive review on the progress of Gildanʼs commitments to its people, communities, the environment and products. Glenn Chamandy, president and CEO, Gildan, said: “As one of the worldʼs largest manufacturers of apparel and socks, we understand that operating responsibly and integrating sustainable solutions drives our success and enables our future growth.
“Providing good working conditions for our employees, improving the communities where we operate and pursuing continuous improvements to reduce our impacts on future generations is at the foundation of our commitment.”
Achievements made during 2016
found in the report include: ● Reduction in energy intensity by 10% and water intensity by 5%.
● Increasing industrial and domestic recycling programmes globally to now recycle or repurpose 86% of total
waste. ● Powering 32% of the companyʼs
energy needs by renewable sources. ● Contributing close to $2 million towards projects in local communities in the US, Canada and Latin America,
including; ● The construction of a new infant ward for the Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital in Honduras which provides care and services to more than 3,000
infants annually. ● A partnership with World Vision Honduras for the Building Safe and Healthy Environments for Children programme. In addition, Gildan made a commitment with the Ministry of Education to fully sponsor renovation projects for 10 schools in the Sula Valley, improving the school conditions
for approximately 4,000 children. ● Over 450 scholarships awarded to Gildan employees and community
Vastex International breaks ground on new company headquarters

astex International has plans for a new facility in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which will enable the company to streamline its manufacturing process, increase its research and development efforts and provide training for screen printers.
The manufacturing portion of the 3,500sq m purpose-built facility will house inventory, metalworking, electrical, assembly and shipping, with the remaining space devoted to offices, a showroom and a large hands- on classroom area with a full complement of screen printing equipment for Vastex University, the companyʼs training programme for entry-level to professional screen printers. Mark Vasilantone, president, said: “The
members to attend professional and vocational schools in Canada, the US
and Latin America. ● Relief to communities in need due to several weather-related disasters that created difficult situations for residents such as Hurricane Matthew in Haiti and
the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta. ● Inclusion for the fourth consecutive year on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. The company remains the only North American one in the textiles, apparel and luxury goods industry group
listed in the DJSI World Index. ● In Latin America, Gildan was recognised with a Distintivo ESR 2016 award for the first time, presented by the Mexican Center for Philanthropy (Cemefi) and the Alliance for Corporate Social Responsibility (Aliarse). This award is presented to companies that are considered leaders in their corporate social responsibility efforts.

ESPA UK Association has announced the date of the next Textile Printing Now
conference. Taking place on Tuesday, November 21 at The Textile Centre of Excellence in Huddersfield, Textile Printing Now will again feature a mix of presentations, displays and networking. The conference will examine the full range of textile printing, coating and surface modification techniques – both analogue and digital – and will introduce concepts that delegates may not have previously considered, to inspire them into business-improving initiatives.
Supported by FESPA, the conference represents part of its Profit-for-Purpose programme – in which profits are re-invested into supporting the print community. FESPA UK Associationʼs Peter Kiddell said: “The conference is intended as a spectacular celebration of textile printing and will point the way towards a very bright future for this vibrant sector.”
