Industry Report ‘I couldn’t be more pleased!’
One of the CMYUK CIRL graduates, Evie Venables, explains why she decided to apply for the one-of-a-kind programme and how it helped her secure her dream job.

Why did you decide to take part in Creatives in Residence Live?
A. Having just graduated in summer 2021 CMYUK’s Creatives in Residence Live seemed like the perfect opportunity to gain industry experience after university. The programme looked fun and exciting, and I had never seen an opportunity like it in Shropshire.
Can you provide an insight into your background? Did you have an interest in design and textile printing before joining the programme? A. I have always loved all things creative and studied BA Hons Textile Design at Leeds Arts University prior to joining the programme.
What did you enjoy most about taking part in the programme?
A. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the leading industry experts during the six-month programme. It was super inspiring and gave an insight into their part of the industry and what our future could hold. I also loved having access and hands on experience using the latest digital printing technologies. Being able to experiment and test samples whenever we liked was a great experience.

Was there any aspect that you felt was particularly challenging?
A. Due to the programme being jam packed with visits, research trips and learning opportunities it meant time to design was sometimes stop start. However, it was a great learning experience to improve time management and the ability to work on multiple things at once.
What do you feel you learnt during the six months?
A. I learnt a lot about sustainability and the circularity of design. I feel like throughout the six months there was always a focus on this and ensuring we were aware of the damages the industry can have on the environment. I learnt a lot about the positives of digital printing and how it can be used to minimise waste and be as effective as possible.
Do you feel the programme helped to develop your skills and grow as a person?
A. The programme with CMYUK was great for developing connections and networking skills. It also grew my understanding and knowledge of the digital printing industry and the production side to design.
The programme finished in March, what have you been doing since?
A. Since the programme has finished, I have been doing my best to build connections and network. I completed a week training course on AVA which was given during the programme to advance my design skills further while searching and applying for jobs in the industry.
What does the future hold for you?
A. I am super pleased to say that I have recently secured my dream job as a junior print designer at H&M head office in Stockholm.
Would you recommend a programme like this to others interested in design and textile printing?
A. I would 100% recommend the programme to other young creatives, but I don’t think there is one! This CMYUK initiative gave me great industry insights and developed my ability to work to an industry standard. My confidence in myself as a designer has grown immensely, and the programme contributed greatly to my next steps. I couldn’t be more pleased.
