It’s finally here, the big one! Well, the big one for Europe, which is still pretty big let’s be fair. IAAPA Europe has finally landed and hopefully you are reading this while you’re at the show and enjoying the fruits of our industry’s finest producers and suppliers.
Sadly this issue we are without Susan Storey’s excellent Park Hoppin’ column; this is down simply to a punishing print schedule which has hopefully got us back on time and on track for future issues. Susan has some really excellent stories for you in the next couple of issues though, so no need to panic!
What else is going on? As I’m writing this from the UK, it seems as good a time as any to mention the country has a new prime minister in the form of Liz Truss. I won’t comment politically, but I will say that I read a lovely tweet earlier which said simply “There is no longer any need for anyone to have impostor syndrome ever again, now”. What the incoming PM has to get a handle on is those energy costs. Sure, many businesses are insulated to an extent with longer pre-negotiated contracts but there are two issues with this at least. First, some companies will be renewing those contracts, and the new prices will be absolutely eye-watering to put it politely. And second, if high energy users are locked in to lower contracts, it’s unlikely their energy suppliers will be able to do anything about the disparity between what they’re supplying and what it’s costing them to supply it; it may be a factor in energy companies going to the wall or requiring a massive amount of government assistance.

It’s going to be an interesting winter, everywhere. So in the meantime, let’s enjoy IAAPA Europe, and each other’s company. Jon
