Uncharted territory

Shedding some light on the epic all-new dark coaster from Sally Dark Rides and Intamin, Park World explores Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence

T

he result of the first ever collaboration between Sally Dark Rides and Intamin, Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence is the new dark coaster located at PortAventura World in Spain.

Combining dark ride scenes by Sally Dark Rides with a Multi Dimension

Coaster by Intamin, the ride is based on the Uncharted movie, inspired by the video game series which goes by the same name. Those who have seen the movie or played these games will be expecting action and adventure from this high speed indoor coaster - and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. First up, a bit of background. The Uncharted movie tells the story of

treasure hunters Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan ‘Sully’ on their quest to locate a 500-year-old lost fortune amassed by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Alongside fellow adventurer Chloe Frazer, the pair find themselves in a white-knuckle race to find the fortune - but hot on their heels is the ruthless Santiago Moncada and his mercenaries. Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence succeeds in taking this tale

of adventure and making it all its own - while still staying true to the franchise. The brilliantly themed ride keeps the movie’s three main characters - Nate, Sully and Chloe - as they learn the origin story of a special map created in the 1500s by Spanish explorer, Hernan Cortez, and his Conquistador army. The map marks the location of vast amounts of Aztec gold and silver

hidden inside a mountain on the California coast - and the Uncharted trio must solve a series of clues to find it ahead of Landon Killbride - the attraction’s specially created villain - and his henchmen. But it seems like the gang will need some help. Park visitors who are up

for this challenge will find the dark coaster in PortAventura World’s Far West area, on the edge of the park’s western-themed village, Penitence.

‘Uncharted’ would nevertheless be a highly appropriate choice for this new dark coaster, because it really does feature a hell of a lot of firsts - and this makes it a must-ride for intrepid riders looking for something new and different. It is the very first Multi Dimension Coaster in Spain, the first indoor quintuple LSM Launch coaster in the world, and it features the world’s first side launch. And of course, the two years spent by the team of artists and installers

at Sally Dark Rides ensuring the complex audio-visual systems, special effects, projections and media, lighting, and advanced animatronics all came together seamlessly to bring the story to life, cannot go unmentioned. Between the detailed theming, carefully thought-out storyline, and the

pioneering nature of the coaster with all its never-before-seen elements, Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence makes for an all-round incredible experience. And this experience starts the moment that guests approach the queue.

The adventure begins

Park explorers are confronted by the mountain - a towering rock face featuring the carved face of an Aztec figure looming over Penitence. At the base of this imposing façade is a wooden cabin - which serves as the entrance and exit to the ride - and from here on out, the adventure begins. Visitors are surrounded by traditional Western-style decor and memorabilia as they queue through the cabin before reaching the Uncharted trio’s headquarters. Guests find an animatronic Nate and Chloe deciphering a map, while Sully is shown on-screen on video call as he discovers and explores an ancient Aztec temple - and the site of the treasure - and he’s taking guests with him. Following in the footsteps of Sully, visitors are transported to the temple through a torch-lit passageway as the queue becomes a walkthrough. The
