PortAventura World opens Uncharted-inspired coaster
P
ortAventura World has unveiled its new attraction, Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence, the only one in the world inspired by the Uncharted movie from Sony Pictures Entertainment. It is an indoor roller coaster with five launches, with unexpected twists and turns, and the first in Europe to have a lateral drop.
David García, managing director of PortAventura World, says: "This attraction is the outcome of a pivotal agreement with an industry giant in entertainment, Sony Pictures. The alliance permits us to extend our global footprint, by means of a product that is truly state-of-the-art on an international scale and stands equal to the finest attractions globally. With this new ride, our guests can anticipate an unmatched, innovative experience that enhances the diversity and quality of attractions offered. All of this reinforces our position as one of the premier tourist destinations in both Europe and the world."
Luis Valencia, development director of PortAventura World, adds: "The opening of Uncharted reinforces our role as a disruptor in the entertainment industry through the implementation of cutting-edge technology. The characteristics of its multi-dimensional journey, which features plenty of surprises with its many twists and turns through special effects and audio-visuals, will continue to amaze our visitors and attract further interest in our resort. In addition, the immersive story-telling is really exciting and promotes very positive values. We
can't wait for everyone to try it and are convinced that it is one of our most stimulating experiences.” Jeffrey Godsick, executive vice president, brand strategy and partnerships, head of location- based entertainment, comments: “The opening of Uncharted, the ride, is a testament to PortAventura’s expertise in attraction development. A display of safety and care with the IP was evident from fabrication through completion. PortAventura World is known for adventure and our global teams, including PlayStation, have worked collectively to ensure all guests can look forward to becoming Uncharted explorers.”
“The Uncharted film takes viewers on a grand adventure in search of treasure, making it perfectly suited for a thrilling roller coaster ride,” says Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We can’t wait for fans and newcomers alike to experience key moments from the film in this vibrant attraction.”
The opening ceremony was also attended by Rich Hill, creative director of Sally Dark Rides, and Ignasi Guasch, CEO of Intamin Amusement Rides. Built on a base measuring 4,800 square metres and standing 16 metres high, this dark ride roller coaster, designed as a family concept, takes visitors on a 673-metre journey completely in the dark where they will be amazed by a multitude of special and audio-visual effects and immersive experiences in 29 key moments, all based on the film Uncharted, released in cinemas in 2022. The attraction, which
reaches a height of 12 metres, is based on cutting- edge technology that makes possible elements such as a state-of-the-art 360-degree rotating platform, a thrilling 15-metre-high inverted free fall with a steep 70-degree incline, an inverted launch and a sideways drop, the first of its kind in the world. The visitors' adventure will begin on the very approach to the area, discovering the imposing mountain, with an experience that starts even before entering the attraction. From the very first minute, the guest becomes an explorer, immersing themselves in the Uncharted story.
