MARKET REPORT: ASIA PACIFIC


– Universal Studios Beijing had the Scares @ Universal Halloween event, which was quite popular in 2024. The event saw a significant increase in attendance compared to its debut in 2023. Universal Studios Beijing has even kept two of the Halloween attractions open for a longer operating period.


– Fantawild Group, the owner of the Boonie Bear IP, opened 9 theme parks or water parks throughout China, all opened by the end of August 2024. Almost all these projects are “asset light” meaning Fantawild is responsible for the design, implementation and operation but is not the park owner. Fantawild also opened a new themed shopping mall with a “Boonie bear” theme. The 1-million- square-foot mall has Boonie Bear sculptures throughout the mall, a Boonie Cubs FEC with amusement rides and other lifestyle, recreational tenants.


– For local industry leader, Chimelong, their THEA award winning spaceship theme attraction underwent a series of upgrades adding more indoor rides and children’s play areas to attract the family market. Halloween at their Paradise Park in Guangzhou was very successful. Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai added a cable car attraction. Finally, Chimelong, the new destination forest theme resort and animal safari in Qinyuan, north of Guangzhou, is expected to finally open in early 2025.


– Jinma, one of the largest theme park ride manufacturers in China is entering the investment and operations area. Jinma installed rides and took over management of a new ungated amusement park in Zhongshan, near Zhuhai.


– Shanghai Legoland There are high expectations for the new Legoland under construction in Shanghai. The investment level is higher than typical Legoland parks and new rides and theme lands will be on offer. Shanghai Legoland will feature the first Monkey King area, called “Lego Monkie Kid” which is only available in China. The opening date scheduled for June 2025 and many of the rides are installed and undergoing testing.


– Indoor skiing and snow play attractions in urban locations are becoming more popular with new projects opening in Shanghai, Shenzhen and many other cities. These are smaller footprints which also incorporate shopping centers and dining complexes.


– Hong Kong Disneyland is still benefiting from their new Frozen Land which opened in 2023. Hong Kong Disneyland upgraded their evening spectacular with a drone show element.


– In 2025, the 11 Skies project witch bills itself as a “game changing retailtainment destination is expect to open at the Hong

Kong International Airport. 11 Skies will have a number of new attractions including Kidzania, a soaring over Hong Kong flying theatre and a Paddington’s play adventure.


Southeast Asia – Tourism is rebounding in Southeast Asia with opening up of visa-free travel with China as well as strong intra-regional travel. The economies in Southeast Asia are strong and the young middle-class populations are seeking entertainment experiences. As the theme attraction industry in Southeast Asia benefits from international tourism, a recovering tourism market is important for industry success.


– It was a busy year for Sentosa Island, Sentosa Sensoryscape opened in March 2024, a free interactive landscape and art park that comes alive at night. Sentosa Island hosted a temporary Harry Potter Forbidden Forest experience. Harry Potter remains in Singapore at Resorts World Resort in the form of a Visions of Magic, interactive art exhibition.
