Park Word

in association with

Merlin Entertainments has reported results for the year ended 29 December 2018. Highlights included a record 67 million visitors, up 1.4% on 2017. Resort Theme Parks organic revenue grew by 9.1% driven by successful product investment, favourable weather and another strong Halloween period; LEGOLAND Parks organic revenue increased by 6.4% due to the opening of a record 644 accommodation rooms, offsetting a broadly flat like for like performance; while Midway Attractions enjoyed organic revenue growth of 1.1%, with a continued recovery in London trading. Full details are available on the Park World website, along with a comment from CEO Nick Varney. With parks worldwide gearing up for the 2019 opening season, my inbox is starting to fill with news of new rides and attractions, which will inform some interesting stories in the months ahead I’m sure. First stop for me will be PortAventura World, where I have been told I need to try out an exciting new dark ride; I’m sure you, like I, have a good idea what that will be! I look forward to writing about it. Being new to the industry I am taking the

opportunity to talk to, and learn from as many people as possible. I had a great conversation with Amanda Thompson OBE about life at the helm of Blackpool Pleasure Beach month as part of our ‘Industry Influencer’ series. Find out what she had to say on pages 44 and 45. I'm also able to bring you insights from Efteling in

the Netherlands, Walibi Belgium, Castle Park in the US; and Tropical Islands Resort in Germany, as well as from experts in the world of theming and much, much more... I hope you enjoy reading the issue as much as I did pulling it all together!
