Schools to take over Tate Liverpool

Edge Hill University and Tate Liverpool are to deliver a ground-breaking educational programme that uses iconic artworks in new ways. From spring 2019 the

institutions will begin their Schools in Residence programme. Hosted in Tate Liverpool’s art display Ideas Depot it invites

children, staff, and students from City Region schools to use the gallery as a learning resource where they will spend a week in residence and their curriculum will be delivered using exhibited artwork as a way of teaching core subjects. Ideas Depot features artists such as Salvador Dali, Mona Hatoum, Henri

Matisse, and Chris Ofili. It is a colourful and inviting space showing iconic paintings, sculptures, and photographs from the Tate collection of modern and contemporary art. The display has been designed by architect Sam Jacob to resemble the ways artworks might be stored, usually behind the scenes. In anticipation of each residency – with one taking place per term – the

pupils and their teacher will visit behind the scenes at Tate Liverpool’s to see and select the works they would like to have on display during their residency. The display has been developed in parallel with the initial phases of

research Edge Hill University Faculty of Education is undertaking with Tate Liverpool and this innovative education and community project aims to inform gallery learning approaches. The project aims to explore new ways for schools to enhance and enrich teaching and learning, and for teachers, children and their families to enjoy and develop a sense of ‘ownership’ of museum and gallery spaces. Ideas Depot is available for use until summer 2019.

t the Bett Sho , 23-26 Januar 2019

January,

NewVIc Performing Arts students have been working on a project with Stratford Circus Arts Centre around a show called Nightclubbing, exploring themes of "sheroes", cultural icons, intersectionality, female and broader femme representation and celebration of diversity. Students have had a workshop with the creator of the show Rachael Young and have been devising their own piece around the themes. They showcased their piece to Rachael and other production staff at Stratford Circus and got feedback on their work in November. Students also had the chance to see Rachael perform in her piece at Stratford Circus. Rachael Young makes theatre, live art, interactive installations and socially engaged

projects. She likes to work in the spaces between disciplines and discover new languages for performance through collaboration. The sheroes project, paid through and

organised by NewVIc's student development team, has given students an opportunity to create connections in the workshops, to plan and devise their own piece on the themes of the main show. The students will now take the feedback from the professionals given after their performance to develop and create their final piece. This will be performed in the winter showcase. According to Rachael Young, "For me, making

art is about creating a platform from where I can shout about the things that matter to me, it's about uncovering hidden narratives, reading

between the lines and attempting to explore that which is often brushed under the carpet. I love the response to my show that NewVIc has shown. The musical choices that students have used and the constant theme of endure, endure, endure are brilliant. I feel the whole piece has been brought together so well, some of the themes covered are super strong especially the parts on ‘I am sorry' and the motifs of the facial expressions. I would like to see how students now take my feedback and explore bringing in more textures, building a mad crescendo and using more vocals for their final piece later in the year."
