£42,000 raised for NSPCC at Coleg Cambria
Deborah Carter awarded Outstanding HLTA of the Year 2018 title
Leeds Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Deborah Carter has been awarded the Outstanding HLTA of the Year title for 2018. Deborah, who works at Austhorpe Primary School in Leeds, was
presented with a trophy and framed certificate by Johnny Mercer MP at an awards ceremony in Westminster. The Outstanding HLTA award is aimed at teaching assistants who
have gained HLTA status and who go above and beyond the call of duty to demonstrate the vital role that HLTAs play within schools. The Outstanding HLTA of the Year Award, now in its sixth year, is
A Coleg Cambria event starring Welsh rugby greats has raised an incredible £42,000 for the NSPCC. “An Evening with Sam Warburton” was attended by more than 200
people and saw the former Wales and British Lions captain headline the celebration alongside past teammates George North and Ryan Jones. BBC broadcaster Jason Mohammad hosted proceedings and was joined by
ex-Wales scrum half Rupert Moon, who helped drive the figure upward in his role as auctioneer. The children’s charity is Sam’s main beneficiary in his testimonial year; he
thanked the college, NSPCC Cymru board member Hywel Peterson and Alan Peterson - chair of the NSPCC's Wales Appeal Board - for helping to raise such a phenomenal amount on the night. Cambria is targeting £100,000 for the NSPCC in 2018 and is on target to
do so thanks to a series of activities and challenges held throughout the year. These included a gruelling 48-mile trek in 14 hours across three counties
during the summer by chief executive David Jones and wife Julia. The evening also featured a performance from Only Men Aloud and a
three-course menu showcasing the very best of Welsh produce in association with chef Gareth Stevenson, a Cambria alumnus.

organised by the HLTA National Assessment Partnership (HNAP), an organisation made up of the four regional assessment providers that work together to manage and quality assure the assessment of standards for HLTAs across England: Best Practice Network (South West, West Midlands, East), University of Northampton, (East Midlands) Babcock 4S (London and the South East) and HLTA North (North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber). Deborah qualified for the national award by being judged the
Yorkshire and Humber regional winner in the summer. She attended the national ceremony in Westminster with regional winners from across England. Dr Helen Benstead, chair of HNAP, said: “It’s a major achievement
for Deborah to be awarded the national title and it is very well deserved. These awards celebrate the outstanding contribution HLTAs make to our schools and all the finalists were there because they met a range of exacting criteria set by the judging panel, including demonstrating high aspirations for each pupil, a firm belief in pupils' abilities and a strong commitment to pupils' progress, as well as a continuing commitment to her own professional learning and development.”
