ightingale Primary in Woolwich, London – part of Maritime Academy Trust – is a


small community school with high aspirations for all its pupils. The school believes that all children can be successful when provided with the right support, environment and opportunities. This month Education Today speaks to Andy Wicks, computing teacher at Nightingale Primary, who explains why screen-free resources have helped improve engagement and understanding of coding in the classroom.


Tell us a little bit about what you do and the pupils you work with? I am a computing teacher at Nightingale Primary School; home of almost 240 pupils, with one class per year group. Our focus is to provide all our children with the skills and knowledge to ensure that they are able to make a positive contribution to the local and global community as they grow. My role is to teach pupils computing both here


at Nightingale and the other schools within the Trust. To ensure they are able to fully grasp programming concepts and understand the purpose of coding, I wanted to provide them with effective learning resources and opportunities. The idea behind this is to not only engage them
