Kings Cross Academy in Camden harnesses power of peaceful protest

Pupils at a primary school in Camden have discovered the power of peaceful protest, thanks to their citizenship lessons. At Kings Cross Academy the children were fed up with taxis parking

by their school and leaving their engines running. They sent letters of protest to their local council and created some eye catching posters. Camden Council was impressed with their messages and had some of the designs made into road signs which were attached to lampposts. The project came about after the children got involved in the First

News ACTive Citizenship Award Scheme, launched in conjunction with the Association for Citizenship Teaching (ACT). Editor of First News, Nicky Cox MBE, said: 'Understanding democracy and its role in society empowers children and enables them to make informed decisions about their own lives.' ACT has created toolkits for teachers and pupils, 'to support,

The National Literacy Trust was joined by their Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, at Wisbech & Fenland Museum recently to celebrate the wealth of local activity that is taking place to improve the literacy skills of children and families in Cambridgeshire. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, who has been Patron of the National

Literacy Trust since 2010, presented excited pupils from Elm Road Primary School with their very first Literacy Toolkit. Created by the National Literacy Trust and Walker Books, the toolkit contains 50 brand new books, fun activities and materials to help children develop a love of reading at school and at home. Elm Road Primary School is the first of 24 schools across Cambridgeshire to

receive a Literacy Toolkit gifted by professional services company KPMG. The toolkits will help to inspire more than 6,000 children to read for pleasure and will provide schools with 1,200 brand new books. The pupils of Elm Road Primary School were also treated to a fun-filled

storytelling session with children’s author Marcia Williams, based on her retelling of the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol. The session was inspired by the original manuscript of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, which is one of the many treasures on display at the Museum. Graham Lockwood, Principal at Elm Road Primary School, said: “Our pupils

were absolutely thrilled to meet HRH The Duchess of Cornwall today and to be gifted a fantastic Literacy Toolkit, filled with lots of brand new books and exciting materials that will no doubt inspire every pupil in the school to get reading. And what an extra treat for the children to be able to meet Marcia Williams – an author whose books they have been reading this term. Having Marcia bring her retelling of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol to life was truly magical! This is a day Elm Road Primary School will never forget.”

engage and empower children to become change makers'. As well as discussing different topics in class, children identify an issue that matters to them and take action. As well as working towards the award, they can publicise their venture via a media platform provided by First News. Liz Moorse is Chief Executive at the Association for Citizenship

Teaching (ACT) , and believes citizenship is needed now more than ever: 'We live in a society with so many issues: racism, hate crimes, poverty and concerns about the UK post-Brexit. We have increasing numbers of children who are in a continual state of anxiety. Citizenship gives them tools so that they can think about the issues and decide what they can do as responsible citizens.'
