MERKUR SPECIAL
The Gauselmann Group as employer
Training, awards, incentives O
ne of the key factors in the success of the Gauselmann Group is its motivated and capable employees. Currently, the group employs 12,000 people worldwide, around
7,000 of these in Germany. Around 220 people are undergoing training in 16 different occupations and dual courses of study. In 2017, 83 young people started an apprenticeship with the Gauselmann Group.
Apart from the traditional administrative and commercial/technical occupations, training is also offered in new industry-specific careers. Paul Gauselmann is among the key initiators campaigning for the conceptual design and introduction of apprenticeship professions in the coin-op industry. Following a five-year trial period (2008–2012) and subsequent evaluation, the two- and three-year ‘coin-op service technician’ and ‘coin-op specialist’ apprenticeship professions were merged into one. The result, now firmly anchored in the “Bundesausbildungsgesetz” (German Federal Training Act), is the three-year industry-specific training course leading to the qualification of ‘coin-op specialist’, which offers trainees the option at the latest in the third year to specialise either in customer service or mechatronics.
All trainees play an active role in the company as ‘games makers’ in various ways from day one: whether in the company management of the virtual Merkur Training Company (MAF), as part of the project team for planning and organising events for example for school classes or parents, or at regional career fairs. Other trainees are keen members of the experienced editorial team that keeps the official trainee website up-to-date with news and information.
Each year, the good to excellent examination
results of the graduates, as well as numerous top distinctions at federal state and national level, are an endorsement of the company’s excellent training quality. The high number of applications the Gauselmann Group receives

each year also speaks for itself: in 2017, more than 2,400 young people applied to join the ‘games makers’, with 83 lucky candidates winning one of the coveted training positions. The company has set itself the goal to offer all trainees and apprentices interesting job prospects within the company after they have completed their training. In 2017, 86 per cent of graduates decided to pursue their future career path in the Gauselmann Group.
In addition to the various initial training
courses, the Gauselmann Group also offers a wide range of advanced training opportunities and development programmes for different target groups. These include management development programmes, individual human resource development measures and the Young Professionals Seminar (YPS), specifically aimed at career starters. The Gauselmann subsidiary CASINO MERKUR- SPIELOTHEK also offers training measures specifically for employees of CASINO MERKUR- SPIELOTHEK arcades. One of these is the one-year in-service training course to become a ‘casino service specialist (Chamber of Commerce approved)’, which the company offers in collaboration with the “IHK Akademie Ostwestfalen” (Eastern Westphalia Chamber of Industry and Commerce Academy). More than 600 employees have successfully completed the certificate course to date. Staff also have the opportunity to obtain additional in-service professional qualification as ‘coin-op specialist’ through the external students examination. CASINO MERKUR-SPIELOTHEK also offers induction training for new employees in the form of kick-off events at the company’s headquarters in Espelkamp, at which participants gain extensive insights into the industry and the company. The Gauselmann Group organises its wide range of training measures at the company’s exclusive training
centre, Schloss Benkhausen in Espelkamp. The Gauselmann entrepreneurial family acquired the 500-year-old castle in 2010 and converted it as part of a lavish renovation project.
The GAUSELMANN INSTITUTE, which opened in spring 2017, is a unique academic institution that researches practice-related issues and initiates future-oriented further training programmes. The institute cooperates with the Gauselmann Group and Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft (FHDW), a private university of applied sciences. The GAUSELMANN INSTITUTE offers Gauselmann Group employees a programme of further education that provides managers with training
in general management and business development. The programme is designed to enable participants to proactively take on the challenges that arise in their area of business and to strengthen the foundations for sustainable business development. The GAUSELMANN INSTITUTE is also involved in research. This research focuses on a number of areas, including trend research in game development, human resource development and ethical entrepreneurship. The research results benefit the Gauselmann Group directly. In addition, research that serves the region, such as regional development studies, is also planned. The GAUSELMANN INSTITUTE has its headquarters in Schloss Benkhausen.
