Latino America Ricki Chavez-Munoz reports on what’s happening in South America. L
14 OCTOBER 2024 T
he news that has us on tenterhooks and that will be talked about by many during the G2E in Las Vegas, over 5-8 October, concerns the Plenary in the Brazilian Senate concerning the casino and bingo bill, PL 2.234/2022, which was due to have taken place last month, September. This issue cannot report on it as it goes into production for printing before then, to be ready for this month.
During the seminar “Challenges and Regulation of Betting and Casinos”, held by Brazilian top newspaper group, Editora Globo on Monday, August 26, with the support of the government of Rio de Janeiro State, the panel debating the topic “Challenges in the regulation of online betting and casinos and their impact on the states of the Brazilian Federation”, had as participants: Celso Sabino, Minister of Tourism; Senator Irajá Abreu; Hazenclever Lopes Cançado, President of LOTERJ (Rio Lottery); and Magnho José Santos, President of the Instituto Brasileiro Jogo Legal.
In his presentation during the debate, casino bill proponent Senator Irajá said that he was confident that there would be enough votes to approve the casino bill when the vote in the Senate takes place, “in September”, adding: “The text of the bill is ready, it is ripe. I am very sure that we have enough votes to approve this bill and give the Brazilian people the framework for a new business environment, with clear rules and that can invite serious people to work in this sector.”
Just imagine what would happen in Brazil with a full casino law, that is the investment that would go into the country. Simply because, with an approved online gambling and sports betting law and regulations, the Government is ready to collect US$554.4 million for 113 licenses for this sector known as “Bets” in the country, following the deadline for the preferential purchase of licenses to operate sports betting and online casino in Brazil. That is just for the licenses approved in the first batch, which will begin operations on January 1, 2025. There is no doubt that the income from the full gaming industry will have a positive impact on the country’s economy and GDP, as has already been seen in Colombia.
