FINDMYEXPERT.COM A new way of working

David Copeland, CEO of iGaming recruitment experts Findmyexpert.com, on why the industry is seeing a rise in project-based consulting

P

roject-based consulting is becoming more commonplace in many industries, and the iGaming sector is no different. With growth showing no signs of abating, it’s important to look at the reasons why it’s

so popular, the opportunities and challenges it presents and the impact, if any, that Brexit will have. Project-based consulting brings a number of benefits to the iGaming industry. Firstly, it allows operators and suppliers to access the very best talent. By tapping into a much larger, global pool of remote consultants with different areas of expertise and knowledge, they are more likely to find exactly who they are looking for. It also offers greater flexibility because they are

free to hire specialists for specific projects without the commitment that goes into standard hiring/ employment, which can take many months to complete especially if VISAs and work permits need to be obtained. In addition, there is no need to go through the

lengthy process of interview, negotiate, work notice, relocate, on-board, etc. Consultants can find work and start immediately. They also have the freedom of working where and

how they want to, which is becoming increasingly important for top talent looking to strike a better work/life balance.

The Challenges of Consulting Consulting is not without its challenges. Some people work better in a team environment and enjoy the atmosphere and buzz of office life. But this is often made up for by the fact that they have more freedom when working on a project-basis, and, indeed, many consultants quickly adapt to, and thrive on, working independently. Consultants may also have concerns surrounding

payment. When working for a client remotely, the fear of not receiving payment is a common one even though it’s rare. However, many consultants choose to work through a reliable and trusted intermediary to deliver commissions and handle disputes, giving them peace of mind. This goes both ways; operators and suppliers may be concerned about whether their consultant is actually working on the task at hand. They cannot look over their shoulder to check what they are doing like in a traditional employee/employer set up.

This is why most consultants and operators/ suppliers work with a third-party intermediary to ensure the relationship is mutually beneficial for both parties.

The Rise in Popularity

There are a few reasons why the iGaming sector is well suited to project-based consulting. One is that top talent is in short supply and finding experts with the fundamental skill sets that gaming is built upon is a huge challenge. Then there is the geographical location of

operators and suppliers. The iGaming industry is truly global, with businesses based in countries all over the world. But finding talent locally can be difficult; it is often the case that the labour is simply not available, or not of the necessary quality. For employees, the benefits of consulting are

strong draw away from traditional employment – freedom, flexibility, the opportunity to work on different projects all over the world without constant upheaval. A great example of this is the roll-out of legal

sports betting in the USA; casino and racetrack operators will need to tap into the knowledge and experience of European sportsbook consultants, many of whom would like to get involved but don’t want to go through the hassle of obtaining a VISA and relocating.

The Impact of Brexit

As for the impact of Brexit, there is no real clarity about what is going to happen, but it is unlikely that recruitment/employment will become easier There is a good chance that freedom of movement will be greatly reduced, and wage inflation could occur, certainly in the UK. The fact that project-based consulting has no

problem with cross-border movement means that consultants can continue to work remotely whatever happens. Project-based consulting is very much here to stay; it is being driven by operators and suppliers seeking specialists over generalists, and a fundamental change in how and where we like to work. As the technology required to work remotely continues to improve, so does the appeal of becoming, and working with, consultants. It’s very much a win/win for both parties.
