WORLD CUP WORLD CUP WORLD CUP

As I write this, England are preparing for their first World Cup semi-final in… Well, a really long time. Only their third ever, if memory serves me right. The country has gone mad, from being completely nonplussed (thanks to years of hype and under- performance, to be generous) to actually enjoying what has been one of the craziest and most fun tournaments for decades.

I bring this up not because I am just SO DAMN

EXCITED, but because the US sports fan is generally a pretty savvy soul, and football has been a growing sport there for some time now. I do wonder what one of the world’s largest sporting tournaments means for the burgeoning sportsbooks that have already appeared after the PASPA ruling? These are exciting times – though I still say the bar will be set by the next Super Bowl, this is still a potentially interesting set of figures. In other news, the UK has had an actual summer, and I got spectacular sunburn trying to do a half-Ironman triathlon to raise funds for one of the places my beautiful daughter gets support and treatment. Totally worth it. Meanwhile, enjoy the issue.
