Reinventing The Strat


Iconic is the only word to describe the Strat at the Las Vegas Strip’s north end. New owners have rebranded and invested in a property that sorely needed some love – Steve Arcana, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Golden Entertainment spoke to Casino International about the project

n recent years, the Stratosphere has looked a little lonely at the Strip’s north end, with building projects nearby stalled, empty lots, and demolitions. But the top end of the Strip is enjoying a new lease of life, and The Strat is right at the heart of the action. The new owners


have embraced the property’s traditional customer base and have invested heavily to give that customer an unbeatable, great value property. Steve Arcana, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Golden Entertainment, explained what’s been going on.


Casino International: How long has Golden Entertainment owned the Stratosphere? Steve Arcana: Just over two years, since October 2017.


CI: As a property, on the modern Strip, describing the Stratosphere as iconic is an understatement – but it had not had much love in recent years, I think it’s fair to say.


What’s happened in your two years of ownership? SA: First of all, you’re right in that it hadn’t had too much attention. It opened in 1996 and finished the property in 1998, and the property had a series of ups and downs, and ownership changes. It’s had a multitude of proprietors and through that timeframe and some challenging economic times, the property didn’t get much attention. The property though, is iconic; it’s the largest observation point west of the Mississippi, people know and visit the Stratosphere from around the world. When we took it over I think we embraced that iconic nature, and embraced the fact that the property would have the ability to perform at a higher level with some capital investment. We took the approach of modernising and rebranding the


property, we’re about halfway through that process at the moment. In the last year and a half, we have upgraded the restaurant product, we’re doing four to six floors a year of room renovation; we have embraced the iconic nature of the
