PHAM NEWS | MARCH 2025 Vans & Racking

Avoiding the pitfalls of parking your van

Van drivers are being urged to familiarise themselves with lesser-known parking laws to avoid unexpected fines. Experts at LeaseLoco.com highlight five regulations that could lead to costly penalties. While vans generally follow

the same parking rules as cars, their larger size means they can obstruct roads and face additional regulations. For instance, if a van weighs over 2,500kg and is parked on a road with a speed limit greater than 30mph, you must leave the sidelights on. Parking on pavements is

typically prohibited unless signs allow it – especially in London and Scotland, where violations can

incur fines of up to £130 and £100, respectively. John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco.

com, says it’s important to understand these regulations to avoid obstructing other road users and incurring penalties, whether you’re a tradesperson or using a van for personal transport. Key regulations include: Pavement Parking: Avoid unless

signs permit it. Overnight Parking: Face the

traffic direction and use parking lights if necessary. Residential Areas: Some

councils require permits for overnight parking. Driveways and Junctions: Do not

block access points or park within 10 meters of junctions. Grass Verges: Heavy vans over

7.5 tonnes should not park on grass verges unless loading or unloading. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/325/68
