PHAM NEWS | MARCH 2025 Accessible Bathrooms
Design includes tactile and visual
cues for users Focusing on accessibility, inclusivity, and ease of use, the Mira Select Flex mixer shower features a traditional surface- mounted concentric mixer, along with several tactile, visual and audible cues, to aid user navigation and ensure a comfortable, accessible, and pleasurable showering experience for all users. Catering for a broad range of visual
impairments and physical disabilities, the Select Flex is safe and easy to use, whether standing, seated, or being assisted by a carer. It features an easy-grip loop handle lever for temperature, a low-friction slide bar for one-handed adjustment of shower head height, and a simple push-button action to enable consistent flow and temperature control. Additionally, the shower’s visuals and
detents have been designed and developed in conjunction with the Royal National Institute of Blind People to ensure it is optimised for those with visual impairments.
Dave Pixton, senior industrial designer
at Mira Showers, comments: “This innovative and easy to use shower exemplifies inclusive design and makes showering accessible for everyone.” The Select Flex has won a number of
awards for its inclusive design, most recently a Good Design Award at the Good Design exhibition in November. ◼

Water saving models are easy to use
The electric mixer shower range from AKW now includes flow-limited models. The new versions of the Arka Cool Touch, Arka Thermostatic and Vettora showers are designed to reduce water usage while maintaining safety and reliability. These models have been approved by WRAS and are claimed to save between 40 and 69% more water compared to standard units. The maximum flow rates are 6 litres/min for the Arka Cool Touch and Vettora, and 8 litres/ min for the Arka Thermostatic, potentially leading to significant savings in both water usage and
associated costs. Each model features a pre-set maximum temperature of 38°C for user safety. The showers have been designed to be stylish and durable, with ease of use in mind.
The Arka Cool Touch includes two paddle levers for those with limited dexterity, which independently control temperature and flow. The Arka Thermostatic TMV3 has rounded paddle levers, while the Vettora Thermostatic TMV2 features peg levers for simple operation. ◼
