Maximising space and efficiency in Cornwall


Equipment from Altecnic has been specified for the heating system installed at Copper Beech, a new holiday home development in St Issey, Cornwall. Copper Beech consists of six properties and was specifically designed to achieve high standards of energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. The development operates


under the UK government’s Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, which encourages the adoption of renewable heating technologies through financial incentives. The RHI scheme requirements, along with the objectives of the property developer, shaped the installation from the outset, prioritising both environmental performance and the practical need to maximise usable space in each property.


HIUs within each property, the project team was able to eliminate the need for large, centralised hot water cylinders and bulky distribution equipment. This approach not only maximised the usable living space in each holiday home, but also allowed for a more flexible and streamlined installation in the plant room.


Amber Heating, the contractor


for the project, selected ground source heat pumps as the main source of heating for Copper Beech. Unlike traditional gas or oil boilers, ground source heat pumps operate most efficiently at lower flow temperatures, typically around 50°C. This difference meant that conventional heating distribution systems would not be suitable, as they are often designed to work at higher temperatures. Instead, the installation required equipment that could maintain reliable hot water and space


heating performance at these lower temperatures, without compromising user comfort. To address these needs, Altecnic


supplied SATK22307 Direct Heat Interface Units (HIUs) for each holiday home. These HIUs are engineered for low-temperature networks and optimised for compatibility with renewable heat sources like ground source heat pumps. Their compact design was particularly important for Copper Beech, where both the central plant room and the individual properties had limited available space. By installing the

Demonstrating the benefits of combining renewable technologies for greater efficiency and sustainability, Stiebel Eltron says it has unveiled the country’s first fully integrated heat pump and solar energy system in a home. Installed at a home in North


Wales, the system combines Stiebel Eltron’s heat pump system with Solarwatt’s solar panel technology and smart energy management systems, for a single renewable energy package. At the heart of the collaboration


is Solarwatt’s advanced Manager Flex and Stiebel Eltron’s EM Trend software package, which both optimise the system and support the storing of energy. After years of close collaboration


between the two companies, the integrated management systems allow homeowners to control outputs via an app, enabling them


to power appliances, store energy and draw grid power as needed. Additionally, the intelligent


control system allows the heat pump to automatically optimise energy consumption in response to changing weather conditions to utilise energy generated from Solarwatt’s solar panels more effectively. A first-of-its-kind offering to


the UK, the collaboration between Stiebel Eltron and Solarwatt has a proven track record, having been implemented successfully in Germany, where both companies are originally based. “This collaboration represents

features decentralised HIUs in each property, all supplied by the central ground source heat pump. The HIUs manage both domestic hot water and space heating, ensuring that each home receives consistent service despite the lower operating temperatures.

Throughout the installation, the focus remained on integrating efficient, appropriately sized equipment that would deliver the required performance while fitting within the physical limits of the development. Solution for internal waste water disposal


Saniflo Sanicom 1 lifting stations have been installed at Belfor UK’s Falkirk depot to manage waste water generated by new on-site restoration and laundry facilities. As part of a wider renovation, these installations allow the depot to handle the discharge of grey water without relying on gravity- fed drainage systems, which were not viable in all areas of the building. The Sanicom units are positioned to receive


waste water from multiple sources, including large stainless steel sinks, a commercial dishwasher, washing machines and a boiler. In the restoration room, the unit is installed beside twin sinks and connects to a third sink located in an adjacent space. In the laundry, a second Sanicom handles discharge from laundry appliances and boiler condensate.


Both units use vertical and horizontal pipework that runs up walls, through ceilings and across the building to reach soil stacks. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/725/45
