Good water fl ow can make all the diff erence
A bathroom refurbishment project is the ideal time to address any potential issues with water pressure, because poor pressure is likely to result in a disappointed customer, no matter how much money they might have spent on revitalising their bathroom, says John Blackburn from Stuart Turner.
especially when considering the potential strain it is likely to have on product performance, water waste and the user’s experience. Ensuring customers are happy is therefore a priority and renovations are a great place to start the discussion on water pressure solutions. Water pressure determines
W
the fl ow of water from the tap and all UK properties should have a mandatory water pressure of at least 0.7 bar. Poor water pressure not only has a negative eff ect on the appliances in the home, forcing them to work harder for a longer period of time – thereby increasing costs – it also aff ects water usage, which is of course a concern to the UK as whole. While awareness of low
water pressure and its implication on domestic bathrooms and kitchens has risen in recent times,
ater pressure has always been an important topic,
most homeowners will still not include a pump when budgeting for a bathroom renovation project.
The challenge A report from the international home improvement company, Kingfi sher plc, discovered that seven out of 17 regions in England are set to experience severe water stress by 2030, rising to 12 by 2040. The same report also

pressure should be an absolute priority
found that Brits signifi cantly underestimate how much water they use per day, estimating on average they use just 57 litres, compared to the reality which is 144 litres. The government target for 2050 is to reduce the current personal consumption to 110 litres per person, per day. Recent research undertaken
by the University of Surrey, Bristol and Swansea set out to look at how increased water pressure could actually help to reduce water consumption in showers, and enhance energy effi ciency. Through installing sensors across 290 showers
Powerful pump to meet heavy demand
Engineered for modern living, the new Monsoon Professional variable speed pump has been designed to meet the demands of busy households, luxury upgrades, and small businesses, ensuring optimal water fl ow precisely when it’s needed most. Its ultra-quiet operation also makes it well suited to home settings. The advanced variable speed
technology intelligently adjusts pump speed to match demand, guaranteeing constant pressure to every outlet, even when multiple taps, showers and appliances are in simultaneous use. This not only delivers a superior user experience but also promotes energy effi ciency. “Monsoon Professional is
all about smarter performance and long-term reliability,” says John Blackburn. “It delivers impressive performance, off ering up to 4.2 bar of pressure and fl ow rates of up to 78 litres
featuring combi boilers or pressurised hot water cylinders. Extensive testing has
per minute, ensuring robust and consistent water delivery even under the most demanding conditions. It’s fully certifi ed, energy effi cient, rigorously tested, and backed by an industry- leading fi ve-year warranty, giving homeowners complete peace of mind.” Fully WRAS Approved for safe
use with drinking water systems, the Monsoon Professional easily integrates with properties
confi rmed the Monsoon Professional as the most reliable pump in its class, promising years of trouble- free operation with minimal maintenance. Its compact, all-in-one design simplifi es installation, off ering plug-and- play simplicity for installers. Furthermore, built-in protections safeguard against dry running, overheating and overloading, ensuring the longevity of the unit. John adds: “Whether for a
new build, a complete kitchen or bathroom renovation, or an upgrade to an existing system, the Monsoon Professional off ers exceptional pressure, energy effi ciency, and long- term durability – making it the smart choice for today’s homes.”
around the University of Surrey campus, the team analysed more than 86,000 individual showers across 39 weeks. The researchers found that
while some showers were very long, the average duration was 6.7 minutes. Half of the showers took between 3.3 and 8.8 minutes. The results reveal that at any given fl ow rate, higher-pressure showers were associated with lower water consumption. In addition, the team installed
visible timers into showers so users could see how long they were taking – and this, coupled with the high-pressure shower, meant that on average, showers used up about 17 litres of water. In contrast, those with low pressure and no timer used nearly 61 litres per shower.
Costly upgrades For those that are looking to renovate their bathroom this year, water pressure should be an absolute priority, not only for the impact on energy and water saving, but also to make the most of your home investment. Many customers looking to upgrade their bathroom look and are inspired by the luxury hotel or spa experience. The average cost of a new
residential bathroom lies between £5,500 and £8,000 – and can certainly go upwards from there, with more bespoke and luxury fi ttings costing upwards of £14,000. Ensuring that this cost is providing the best possible investment is therefore an essential for
any customer and installer to consider, and underlines the importance of factoring a shower pump into the budget. A high-quality hot shower
has also been proven to improve cardiovascular health, soothe stiff joints and signifi cantly improve sleep, while a cold shower has several benefi ts too, including lowering stress levels and reducing fatigue.
Pump solutions When it comes to shower pumps, Stuart Turner is an internationally recognised brand, with a history dating back more than a century. Among the many products
designed to support enhanced pressure, our latest release Stormboost (see also page 35) has been targeted at domestic properties. The pump aims to increase mains water pressure by up to 2.5 bar and connects directly to the mains water supply and off ers a maximum output fl ow rate of 12 litres per minute for improved water performance across the home. It’s also great for boosting pressure for combi boilers. In properties with vented
systems, the popular Monsoon pump is compact and quiet in operation and known for its reliability and longevity. It is capable of boosting pressure by up to 4.5 bar and improving water pressure across the home, not just the bathroom. Please see side panel for details of the latest addition to the range. ◼
