Women in tech

Trend Micro’s Camilla Currin

Camilla Currin, Channel Manager at Trend Micro, a global cybersecurity company is a born and bred Zimbabwean, and came to live in the UK 19 years ago. She’s super passionate about the world of security. Here we find out more on why.

Tis is what Camilla Currin had to say.

Tell us about your professional background and how this has contributed to your current working position? I did not have the typical university or college background that so many in our industry seem to have. I came from a secretarial background back in the day, progressing up the chain from personal assistant roles to senior executives in major multi-national organisations in Africa. When I arrived in the UK, working my way through various roles from distribution, operations, vendor management and finally into an Account Director role responsible for some of the key VARs. Each individual experience has taught me the importance of responsibility, taking ownership of tasks, being organised, respecting others, picking myself up when knocked down and striving for excellence at all times.

What are your experiences of being a female tech leader? Early on in my journey into the cybersecurity world, I felt that I had to push myself forward and work hard to not let myself be overshadowed. In order to do this, it is essential to believe in yourself too as that shows added confidence which is vital. I believe that whether you are male or female, if you are passionate about what you do and strive to achieve what you set out to do, respect will always follow.

What challenges have you encountered if any being a female in the tech sector? When I first entered this industry, I oſten saw a level of surprise when I discussed certain topics which my audience did not expect me to have knowledge of. Tat said, I have never felt that me being a female has been a hindrance. Now, with more and more females entering the cybersecurity world, a female leader is less of a surprise!

What are your interests and passions in regards to working in the tech channel? I absolutely love my role as Channel Account Manager here at Trend Micro and I am exceptionally proud to manage our Platinum Partner. I am extremely interested in all the different aspects of cybersecurity, and working here at Trend Micro, I am always kept on my toes in this regard as our company is constantly evolving, bringing out new technologies as well as endlessly enhancing the ones we already

have – there is never a dull moment! I am a people person, and take great pleasure in travelling around the country to the various partner offices – engaging with all the different teams, and presenting to individuals about what we do, and how we can work together as a team to help address their customers’ pain points, at whatever stage and in whatever area these may be.

How can the channel drive greater diversity in the sector? Tis is going to be an ongoing task. It is so important to get across to others, the excitement of being part of this rapidly evolving threat landscape, and how good it feels to be at the forefront in helping in one way or another to tackle cybercrime. Tere are many ways to address this, be it as simple as chatting to friends, presenting to college/university leavers, attending career events and so much more. I believe that these barriers are definitely being broken down and will continue to be so the more we all discuss how great this industry is, and the immense opportunity for us all out there.

How can the channel look to attract more females into leadership positions? I am fortunate enough to work in an organisation that values female leaders and sees the massive benefit of having different genders’ brains working together to bring out the best results. For those organisations that are needing to attract more females into leadership roles, it is really important that these females know the true value that they can bring is seen, and that they will be given a level of trust in their decisions and encouragement in their growth and development. To know that you are believed in and supported is key – the rest will follow.

Are you involved in any other aspects of the wider tech community if so please tell us more about this? With being as passionate as I am about the role I play and the industry I work in, I have fairly recently put myself forward as a mentor to others. Trend Micro has a Global Mentoring Programme which I am part of. I love to understand what others are going through and where I can help with any of their insecurities, fears, concerns, etc. With that information, I can then help them overcome their challenges and bring more positivity and direction to their lives – personal, business or both.
