pryder@datateam.co.uk EDITORIAL A NEW YEAR STARTS HERE

As the year gets into its stride, Madison will be hosting *iceBike 2025. Two years on from changing to a North/South two-show format, the show will return to both London and Manchester, building on previous successes. Showcasing the portfolio of Madison and Sportline brands represents a unique

opportunity for retailers, and, in 2025, will also include the chance to talk in person with Park Tools legend, Calvin Jones, while also hearing from a variety of speakers. Dates for your calendar, iceBike* Manchester on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 February, and

iceBike* London on Thursday 13 and Friday 14 February. Full preview with Dominic Langan on page 7.

As we leave 2024 behind, it’s prime time for some ‘trends and new opportunities’

predictions, if for no other reason than to look back at the end of 2025 and laugh at how badly the crystal ball functioned, despite best efforts and intentions. Here I’ll say that - because I genuinely am a stuck record, and that groove has gotten very deep - cycling as transport will finally see some serious love from the new Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander. Bikes going mainstream, as a form of daily transport, would mean our industry is seen in

a new light by a significantly larger percentage of the approximately 69 million people who make up the UK population. For context, approximately 7.4 million people in England cycled for leisure, sport, and

travel in 2023. Only two percent of journeys in England were made by bike in 2022. Easy to see a massive scope for growth.

Now we - the cycling industry - just need to go where the people are. Emphasis on ‘people’, not cyclists. New customer generation is critical to the future of our industry. To find out more about why, head straight to our exclusive interview with WFSGI head of international sports and cycling, Michelle Smyth, on page 36.
