THE EDITOR A word to the wise
Welcome to 2022 folks. After some overloaded plates, a few too many beverages, and time well-spent with family over the Christmas period, we now enter a new year, albeit with many of the same old anxieties. Despite our premature hopes that we might leave the worst of the coronavirus pandemic behind us in 2021, the rapid spread of the Omicron variant over the winter put an abrupt end to that dream. As the virus continues to disrupt daily life, its impacts on the bike trade also look like they’re
likely to persist. In the coming year, the industry now needs to navigate the ongoing supply issues that have hampered businesses over the past two years, as we’re also likely to see the true limits of cycling’s pandemic boom. In this month’s edition of BikeBiz, industry leaders are urging cautious optimism (or optimistic caution, depending on your perspective), but we also bring you an issue filled with excitement about the future. Firstly, we have the privilege of celebrating the winners in the 2021 BikeBiz Awards, announced
in December, our way of recognising the phenomenal work being done across cycling, from products to inspiring people (p7-11). A massive thank you to all of our nominees for taking part and for all our readers who voted in last year’s virtual awards. The response has been heartwarming. This month, we also explore the trends likely to define 2022, from the future of gravel to tech

innovations in the e-bike market, with guidance from industry leaders working across retail and manufacturing (see p25-26). We also explore new eras for some cycling institutions, as luxury apparel brand Rapha enters a new phase with the departure of long-standing CEO Simon Mottram (full interview p14-15), while The Pedal Club, historically an all-male organisation, finally welcomes women as members for the first time (p33-34). While I would love to be able to tell you exactly how the next 12 months will play out, I wouldn’t want to risk my reputation with concrete predictions, but if BikeBiz can offer you some guidance, and maybe even some opportunity, through all this uncertainty, then we’ve done our jobs for another edition.
