he fall of Twitter, the latest Pokémon, Mercedes peddling subscriptions for “premium” engine features… oh yes, and the increasing cost of living crisis and the dire outlook for the planet due to irreversible climate change - there’s plenty to be downbeat about as we ponder what’s in store for humanity’s final season and when it might arrive. Frankly, I’ve had my fill of it all and I am going to end the year on a positive note that I hope might give you a smidgeon of good cheer as you begin to down tools for the impending holiday season.

Firstly, this will be the last editor’s page from me. No, I’m not going anywhere just yet, but I do feel this piece of prime editorial real estate would be better filled by something a little more tantalising than my bearded face. I’m sure I’m not the only person to excitedly tear open a new issue of the magazine, only to be confronted by yours truly moaning about something barely connected to games and that was hastily written hours before a print deadline.
More immediately, starting this issue you will notice a new panel feature devoted to
recruitment. It’s the first of what is planned to be an unceasing series that brings together experts in their field to consider the issues at the heart of their specialist subject. Next issue we’ll be focusing on PR and after that the plan is to tackle QA, with other planned panels covering subjects such as investment, creative services, accessibility, VR, audio, art, and others. If you want to be involved, or have a subject dear to you and/or your bottom line, reach out and we’ll try and pencil something in for a future issue.
Subsequent to this issue’s Recruitment Panel, we’ll be starting 2023 with the return of DEVELOP/JOBS, which aside from giving the magazine a pleasing and much-needed heft, will highlight those studios looking to increase their talent over the weeks and months ahead, and what they can offer to those eager to find a new challenge that’s equal to the promise of a new year.
Before I sign off and wish you the compliments of the season, just a note to say that nominations are currently being accepted for next year’s Women In Games Awards, Just go to
www.womeningamesawards.com to put forward your preferences for those you think deserve to be honoured at the planned March 2nd ceremony. Nominations will close in the new year, just prior to the next issue arriving, so while you have plenty of time, with it being Christmas, you can be sure the time will fly by.
That’s all from me. See you in 2023! Richie Shoemaker
