“It’s worth pointing out that should it survive this one, next year will mark 25 years since the first issue of MCV rolled off the presses”

Packing the event horizon

aving just returned from a successful and seasonably warm devcom and gamescom, and with a calendar seemingly packed with events through to the autumn and beyond (including the Montreal International Game Summit, aka

MEGAMIGS), it’s fair to say that events are back in a big way. Not just back, but there are a number of them that were once out of reach or flew under the radar, that are now very much occasions to be experienced.

The Game Devs of Color Expo, for example, which, before covid shut the world down, was predominantly a New York thing and almost exclusively North American, has evolved and adapted like so many other industry events to become digital experiences that we no longer have to get on a plane to be a part of.

Then there are the new showcase events that became established during lockdown - of which there are too many to mention, and even a handful of in-person events since that are looking to find a permanent place in the games industry calendar, such as WASD Careers and Scottish Games Week, both of which (along with the aforementioned MEGAMIGS and Game Devs of Color Expo), enjoy some coverage across the following pages. Not that we intended for events to be a theme of the issue, but there we have it.

As we’re on the subject, however, a few words on some events closer to home, namely IRL (November 3rd), which this year, as well as being an informal networking afternoon and evening, will be when we announce this year’s 30 Under 30 intake - another event first.

We’re also starting to make plans for next year’s Women In Games Awards and the 2023 MCV/DEVELOP Awards. While we’re not quite ready to announce exactly when either will be, it’s worth pointing out that should it survive this one, next year will mark 25 years since the first issue of MCV rolled off the presses. Consequently we’re planning for the namesake awards to be a birthday celebration almost as much as a showcase for the ongoing efforts of the UK games industry. We’ll try to ensure that it doesn’t clash with anything else you might have in your calendar, but the way things are filling up, there are no guarantees. Watch this space!
