CME TRAYS EXPANDS CHOICE WITH NEW DESIGNS AND
RECYCLED-CONTENT MATERIALS
Composite Materials Engineering (CME) has expanded its tray range for confectionery and pharmaceutical manufacturers, combining established performance with improved airflow, lighter-weight construction and a recycled-content material.
A
ustralian manufacturer CME Trays is giving confectionery and pharmaceutical producers greater
flexibility in tray selection with an expanded range of designs and materials, including ReNatura, a new recycled-content option designed to meet the same food-contact requirements as its other materials. The tray division of Composite Materials Engineering Pty Ltd (CME) now offers two tray designs and three material options, enabling manufacturers to select solutions that suit their production requirements, handling needs and sustainability objectives. All three materials are formulated and
manufactured by CME to comply with Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for food-contact plastics. Production also operates under the company’s ISO 9001-certified quality management system.
Designed around production requirements The expanded range retains CME’s traditional tray design, which has been used on starch mogul lines worldwide for many years. This option allows manufacturers to maintain existing processes and line settings while continuing to use a familiar tray format. Alongside it, a new improved-airflow design
incorporates openings in the tray feet, allowing warm air to circulate more freely through stacked trays. This supports more even drying and helps manufacturers make better use of drying-room capacity. Both designs feature one-piece compression moulding for hygiene, integrated running pads for reliable conveying and interlocking feet for stable stacking. They are also compatible with major mogul equipment manufacturers,

Three materials, more possibilities CME’s lightweight material uses a proprietary, high-strength, low-density composite to reduce tray weight by up to 20–30% compared with a standard-sized tray. The reduction can make trays easier and safer to handle while helping to lower freight costs, although actual savings depend on tray dimensions and design. For manufacturers who prefer the familiar
weight and feel of conventional trays, CME has also reformulated its traditional material to improve durability, extend service life and reduce breakages. The third option, ReNatura, incorporates
recycled content while meeting the same food-contact requirements. It provides manufacturers with an additional route towards reducing their environmental
Compliance controlled from the source A key differentiator is CME’s control over material development and production. Rather than relying solely on purchased, off-the-shelf compounds, the company formulates its own materials using substances permitted under EU Regulation 10/2011, within the framework of Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004. Materials are compounded in-house and
moulded at CME’s own facility, with ongoing testing and verification carried out in its in-house laboratory. This approach gives the company direct oversight of material composition from raw materials through to the finished tray, while allowing properties to be tailored to specific customer requirements. “Food safety is not something we leave
to a supplier’s certificate,” says Ben Hughes, director of CME. “Because we make our own materials, we control what goes into them and take full responsibility for compliance. That allows us to offer a genuine choice, from the traditional tray customers have trusted for years to a recycled material that meets the same standard. As a family business, that responsibility matters to us.” Established in 1964, CME is a family-
owned Australian manufacturer of advanced composite products. The company has supplied trays to the confectionery industry since 1989, producing starch
mogul,
pharmaceutical drying and chewing gum trays from its facility in Bayswater, Victoria, for customers worldwide. The expanded CME Trays range is
available now.
